What is the schedule for the 2020-21 NBA season?The 2020-21 NBA season was delayed two months, with the regular season schedule getting underway on December 22, 2020.

The season has also been shortened in order to finish in time for the Olympics, with each team set to play 72 games instead of the normal 82-game season.

The provisional end date for the season is May 16, with the playoffs set to begin two days later.

The 2021 NBA Finals are provisionally scheduled to start on 8 July, with any potential game seven taking place on 22 July.

What other changes are in place for the 2020-21 season?Most teams will play their home games at their home courts, but the Toronto Raptors will start the season in Tampa, Florida. This is due to travel restrictions between Canada and the United States.

Decisions on whether fans can attend games will be made by each franchise, with many starting the season behind closed doors.

These decisions will remain under constant review, with the hope that fans will be able to attend at all arenas later in the season.

What changes have been made to the NBA playoffs?The playoffs will contain 16 teams – the same as a regular season – but there will be a slight addition to the format.

Between 18 and 21 May, the NBA will hold a Play-In Tournament for the teams ranked between 7 and 10 in each conference.

The 7th-ranked team in each conference will face the 8th-ranked team, with the winner earning the 7-seed.

The 9th and 10th-ranked teams will then play each other, with the loser being eliminated and the winner going on to play the loser of the first game.

The winner of the final game will be awarded the 8-seed and progress into the playoffs proper.

The playoffs themselves will remain the same – four rounds of best-of-seven series.

How do you bet on the NBA?

When you’re ready to place a bet, your first option is to head to the Betway Insider website to read through our experts’ picks. Each article will have a link to the sportsbook, where you can then place your bet.

The most popular market on the sportsbook for NBA betting is the money line market, where you place a bet on the result of a game. The money line means overtime is included. You can also bet on the win/draw/win market, where you bet on the outcome at the end of regulation time, meaning overtime is not included.

Another popular market is handicap betting – also known as spread betting – in which one team is handed an advantage to even the game up. For example, if one team is a heavy favourite they may be given a handicap of -9.5, meaning they must win the game by ten points or more for the bet to come in. The underdog would need to win the game or lose by fewer than 10 points for their side of the bet to come in.

Aside from betting on the result of the match, you can also bet on how many points you think will be scored. The sportsbook will display a total, for example 199.5, and you can bet on whether you believe there will be more or fewer than that number in a specific game. 

You are also able to place bets on player performances, called player prop bets, including whether a player will score a certain number of points.

2020/21 NBA schedule

The 2020/21 NBA season began on 22 December 2020. The regular season has been reduced to 72 games from the usual 82 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will run until 16 May 2021.

For the first time, the league will hold a play-in tournament before the playoffs start for the teams ranked seventh to 10^th in each conference. The tournament will run from 18-21 May.

In that tournament, the 7th-ranked team will first play the 8th-ranked team, and the winner of that game will be awarded the 7-seed. The 9th-ranked team will then play the 10th-ranked team, with the loser of that game being eliminated from contention. Finally, the winner of the 9th vs 10th game will play the loser of the 7th vs 8th game, and the winning team will be awarded the 8-seed. These games will take place for both conferences.

The NBA playoffs begin on 22 May and will take place as normal, with eight seeds from each conference featuring in a four-round bracket. Each series will be best of seven games.

The NBA Finals will begin on 8 July at the latest and must be completed by 22 July.
