Kevin Durant over 34.5 points at Washington Wizards

This pick feels like a curveball at a time when Brooklyn is crumbling. Setting aside the controversy surrounding Kyrie Irving – a large enough controversy that it’s troubling to look past – and this team is still a mess.

Steve Nash was relieved of his duties as head coach, with the likely replacement coming in the form of Ime Udoka, the embattled and suspended Celtics head coach. Ben Simmons has looked positively pedestrian in his time on the floor and the new supporting cast around Brooklyn’s stars have failed to impress.

Durant, through it all, has persisted. He’s cleared 30 points in six of the Nets’ eight games so far. He’s done so without shooting his best, making 34 per cent from outside the arc.

In his career, he’s averaged over 28 points per game against his hometown Wizards. On the road in the nation’s capital, he’ll be poised to perform despite the fires popping up around him.

Portland Trailblazers (+9.5) at Phoenix Suns

I’ll admit that I didn’t see a 5-2 start with first place in the division in early November for Portland before the season began. The Blazers roster is built on a few gambles that looked to have paid off early on.

The most notable of those bets is on Anfernee Simons, who has looked every bit capable of an All-Star appearance thus far. He has filled CJ McCollum’s shoes, and then some.

With Damian Lillard sidelined with an injury for a few weeks, the weight on Simons’ shoulders only grows heavier. On the road against one of the best teams in the West, he’ll need to be on his game.

Based on what we’ve seen thus far this season, there’s no reason to think Simmons and the Blazers can’t shoot their way into a tight game with the Suns, even without Lillard. This line surely jumped when his injury absence was confirmed, yet it moved a bit too far by my estimation.

LeBron James under 28.5 points vs. Utah Jazz

Betting against King James, even at this stage of his career, can feel blasphemous. When he’s playing against the lowly, tanking Jazz, it feels even crazier.

Yet we haven’t seen LeBron score to this level much this season, managing to hit this mark in just three of the Lakers seven games so far.

If he needs to play high minutes and carry a scoring load against a team as soft as Utah, something will have gone wrong for LA. Bet on the Lakers putting Utah behind early and LeBron taking a backseat in the box score.

Golden State Warriors (+4) vs. New Orleans Pelicans

This line comes courtesy of the Warriors playing the second night of a back-to-back, flying in after battling Orlando on Thursday night.

For most teams and players, that is a death sentence. If there is any franchise with the culture and history to survive that gauntlet, it’s Golden State.

Look no further than Stephen Curry’s career marks without rest between games. He averages 25.7 points per game in that circumstance, on a ridiculous 44 per cent shooting from long range. That number is higher than his outside shooting with any other amount of rest between games.

Tired legs or not, Curry always has a trick up his sleeve. He and the Warriors know that Friday’s tilt with the Pelicans could be huge for playoff seeding down the road. They’re the side to pick in that contest.
