Saturday night’s main event at the O2 is like a classic ‘loser leaves town’ wrestling match, with retirement a real possibility for the beaten fighter.

DeGale seemed set for a big finish to his impressive career when he took on Badou Jack in a super-middleweight unification fight in January 2017, but he could only manage a draw before losing his IBF world title in a shock defeat to Caleb Truax later that year.

He won the belt back in an April 2018 rematch, but Truax was an opponent DeGale should never have had any trouble beating and the defeat was a worrying sign that he might be on the way out.

The 33-year-old has since vacated his belt and beat journeyman Fidel Munoz last September, but must prove on Saturday night that he has something left.

Eubank Jr also has plenty to prove.

The 29-year-old is undoubtedly a talented fighter, but he’s come up short in both of his previous bouts against big names.

He lost to Billy Joe Saunders for the European, British and Commonwealth titles back in November 2014, and was schooled by George Groves in the World Boxing Super Series final in February 2018.

A lack of power has always been Eubank’s weakness, especially at super middleweight, and he’ll struggle to beat DeGale if this is to be a tactical boxing match.

He’s always thrown plenty of punches and has managed to overwhelm weaker opponents with his output alone, but that tactic just hasn’t been enough against more technical fighters.

Eubank has brought in a trainer for the first time in his career for this fight, which should help him form some kind of gameplan against DeGale.

It’s hard to trust him against such an experienced opponent, though, given how he’s performed in the past.

If DeGale isn’t completely washed up, he’ll win this fight.

In Lucian Bute and Andre Dirrell, the Londoner has beaten super middleweights who are far more accomplished than Eubank, and he looks good value to eke out a win on points at .
