Prop bets and casino games have gone hand in hand for centuries.

But while there have been crazy challenges for money in poker and sports betting, not so many have centred round the casino.

Let's take a closer look at those times when the casino itself has become the setting for a real money challenge.

5. Amarillo Slim's daring horseback ride

WHEN: 1940s
WHERE: Las Vegas
AMOUNT BET: unknown

'Amarillo' Slim Preston was a legendary Las Vegas gambler and poker player. If there was something to bet on, the chances are Amarillo Slim would bet on it.

Outrageous prop bets were Slim's calling card.

He once challenged daredevil stunt biker Evel Knievel to a round of golf. While that was normal enough, the caveat was that both players had to use hammers as golf clubs.

Slim won the bet.

His craziest bet involved champion racehorse, Seabiscuit. He was convinced that - as a keen runner - he could outsprint the thoroughbred over 100 yards.

Like all good prop bettors, Slim had an edge - he had chosen a 50-yard racecourse outside a Vegas casino.

The length of the track meant that Seabiscuit and jockey had to reach the end and turn around in order to finish the final 50 yards.

In the time it took the jockey to turn around, Slim was well on his way to winning the race.

4. Skylab satellite bet crashes down

WHEN: 1979
WHERE: El Cortez, Las Vegas
AMOUNT BET: $10,000

Las Vegas hotel and casino El Cortez is one of the quainter Downtown establishments, but its legendary long-time owner Jackie Gaughan has added plenty of colour over the years.

In 1979, Gaughan took bets on where the United States space station, Skylab, would crash down to earth when it was due for re-entry that year.

He even took a 10,000/1 bet that the remains of Skylab would land on his own casino.

Ultimately, gamblers - and Gaughan himself - were wide of the mark as the space station disintegrated and landed somewhere in Australia.

3. Bathroom living pays off for Jay Kwik

WHEN: 2008
WHERE: Bellagio, Las Vegas
AMOUNT BET: $250,000

Las Vegas famously boasts some of the most luxurious hotel rooms and facilities in the world. But could you live in a Vegas bathroom for a month to win a bet?

That's what Jay Kwik did when he accepted a bet to live in a bathroom at the Bellagio casino for 30 days.

Friend Andrew Robl put up the money but just as it looked as though Kwik would pull it off, Robl paid $40,000 to buy his way out of the $250k bet several days early.

2. Jeff Gross hits the Stratosphere for a scary prop

WHEN: 2013
WHERE: Stratosphere, Las Vegas
AMOUNT BET: Six figures

This is a bet from another poker player, this time using one of Las Vegas's legendary casinos as a base point.

American pro Jeff Gross famously suffers from vertigo, but accepted a bet in 2013 that he wouldn't bungee jump off the top of the 1,149-ft Stratosphere Tower.

Gross held his nerve and won the bet.

1. Antonio Esfandiari lunges his way to disqualification

WHEN: 2016
WHERE: Atlantis Resort, Bahamas
AMOUNT BET: $50,000

Antonio Esfandiari is recognised as one of America's greatest ever poker players, but he also enjoys a crazy prop bet from time to time.

In 2016 Esfandiari took a prop bet from infamous gambler and hedge fund manager Bill Perkins, requiring the player to perform lunges everywhere he went for 48 hours straight.

After lunging his way round a Caribbean casino, Esfandiari was in desperate need of the toilet.

In too much pain to move, 'The Magician' relieved himself while playing poker and instantly earned himself a disqualification from his tournament.

Despite being out of the tournament, Esfandiari won the bet and donated his $50,000 winnings to charity.

"There is a limit to how far you should go, and in this case I failed," he said shortly after.
