Whether it’s served with mushy peas, tartare or curry sauce, fish and chips is a staple in many homes up and down the country. Now, ahead of national fish and chip day on June 2, online casino Betway dished up the best spots to indulge in the British classic, from local chippies to seaside fish bars.

Measuring popularity by a unique index score - generated by the number of hashtags each location has racked up on Instagram, as well as Google and Tripadvisor reviews - with the lower the overall index score, the higher the ranking - spots from London, Manchester and Belfast came out on top for the deliciously greasy dish.

Known for being one of London’s poshest fish and chip restaurants, The Mayfair Chippy ranked first for its award-winning menu with an index score of eight. As well as serving up the much-loved classic, the fancy chippy also offers an extensive seafood menu featuring oysters, crab and mussels. Located in the Ancoats area of Manchester, The Hip Hop Chip Shop, which serves up fish and chips alongside a bar and live music events, achieved an index of 10 at second place. The northern venue offers a range of fish and chip variations, from classic cod to halloumi substitutes and curry batter fish bites.

Fishers in London and Fish City in Belfast also proved popular with chippy lovers in joint third place. Edinburgh restaurant Bertie's Proper Fish & Chips, which nabbed the fourth spot, is a contemporary twist on the traditional chip shop experience. Meanwhile, London’s Toff’s of Muswell Hill and Birmingham’s Dad’s Lane Fish Bar completed the top five for their traditional chip shop choices.
