CANTO BIGHT (The Last Jedi, 2017)

Appearing in The Last Jedi, Canto Bight is a golden and glamorous coastal city on the desert planet of Cantonica. Home to the most luxurious casino in the galaxy, it’s the ultimate dream destination for the super wealthy. Ok, so you might run into some shady characters, or aliens in the pocket of the First Order, but why worry about politics when you can have fun! Make some coin in the casinos, or chill by the track and watch the farhiers race. 

Calculating the costs of visiting Canto Bight required getting a little bit creative. We took inspiration from a similar hangout of the ultra rich - Monte Carlo in Monaco, and costed up accordingly, basing hotels and food on the most expensive 5-star hotels in Monte Carlo. As for getting there? We looked to Virgin Galactic for space travel inspiration, meaning that Canto Bight is by far the most expensive place to visit on our list! We do advise that you get some practice on an online casino before visiting however!

THE OVERLOOK HOTEL (The Shining, 1980)

With The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep coming to cinemas this Halloween, we decided to take a look back at Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic and imagine what it would be like to visit the Overlook Hotel. There’s a lot of reasons to stay at the Overlook Hotel. It’s grand, spacious, with killer views of the Colorado mountains and plenty of that turn-of-the-century American glamour and charm. In fact, it's the perfect place to get away from the world - though for some the isolation may be a little bit too testing. Sure, the winters can get a little long, and you might find yourself sharing a room with a malevolent ghost or an increasingly erratic husband, but what hotel doesn’t have its quirks? Maybe don’t stay in Room 237 though! 

To cost up the Overlook, we looked to Colorado’s Stanley Hotel, which was the inspiration for Stephen King’s original novel. Accommodation and daily food costs were taken directly from the hotel website, and travel figures based on flights to Denver and subsequent mountain transfer. We made sure to include winter sports in insurance fees, in case you find yourself running through a frozen hedge maze, and worked out the cost of renting a Snow Cat too - just in case you need to get out of there quickly!

LOS ANGELES 2019 (Blade Runner, 1982)

Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles, in the distant future of November 2019. In that case, you’d be forgiven for thinking a stay in Blade Runner’s LA 2019 would be easy to imagine. But the LA in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic is considerably different to the one we know. For one thing, the orange, sunny-haze of downtown Los Angeles has been replaced by darkness and eternal rain. The city itself has become a sprawling metropolis, Tokyo on steroids - a dystopian, neon nightmare. Animals no longer exist, replicants run amok but it’s not all bad - there’s flying cars! Remember to pack an umbrella though. 

We did however use LA to cost up travel and accommodation for Blade Runner’s moody version of the city. Due to the city’s Japanese influence - you can enjoy some tasty ramen on the wet streets - food and drink costs were based on modern day Tokyo. We also included the cost of car rental as you’ll need one to fly around LA - but we’ve assumed due to ubiquity that these are just as pricey as regular cars.

HOGSMEADE (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, 2004)

Hogsmeade is a magical place. Literally. It’s the only wizarding-only village in Britain. Hogsmeade is a charming, quaint place, with slanted rooftops sprinkled with snow, small thatched cottages, holly wreaths hanging on doors and enchanted candles floating around the buildings. Get out of the cold and visit The Three Broomsticks for a refreshing pint of Butterbear by the fire, or stock up on sweets at Honeydukes before daring yourself to visit the Shrieking Shack - the most haunted home in Britain! 

Costing up Hogsmeade was a little simpler than some of our others, as compared to say Canto Bight, it’s pretty local! Hogwarts and Hogsmeade are based in the Scottish Highlands, and so costs were calculated based on real trips north. Food and drink costs were found by converting Harry Potter currency - knuts, sickles and galleons - into pounds.

WAKANDA (Black Panther, 2018)

And isolated kingdom hidden deep in Africa, Wakanda has only recently began to open up the world, which means its currently fairly untouched by tourists. The country really has it all, catering to fans of the city and lovers of the countryside. So there’s some beautiful natural scenery - mountains with giant, cascading waterfalls, surrounded by rolling green hills and lush, tropical forests - alongside megacity cities with shimmering skyscrapers of glass and steel. Wakanda may in fact be the most advanced nation in the world. A country which respects its heritage and roots, but one which isn’t afraid to modernise, it’s worth visiting for the gorgeous purple sunsets alone. 

To cost up Wakanda, we looked to local equivalents and found that Marvel fans generally agreed that the nearest real-world equivalent was Nairobi. Costs were calculated from there, with an additional extra cost for the hiring of a flying jet to get in and out.

ISLA NUBLAR (Jurassic Park, 1993)

Who wouldn’t want to see dinosaurs? In the wake of the recent Jurassic World movies and short movie, Battle at Big Rock, we decided to take a look back at everyone’s favourite prehistoric park. Ok, so there might be a few kinks to work out - but don’t let that worry you. As long as there’s no tropical storms, and the electric fences hold out, Isla Nubar is perfectly safe to visit. Come see the park where no expense was spared! 

Based off the shore of Costa Rica, it’s going to cost you a chunk to get there - flights into San Jose, then a transfer and a boat, and getting into the park itself may cost you an arm and a leg. Based on estimated running cost alone, you’re looking at an extortionate ticket price to get in - say £7483! We took food costs based on Orlando’s Seaworld, and worked out insurance costs based on fees for shark cage diving - an activity which shares Isla Nublar’s risk of being eaten…
