Over 9.5 wickets on day one -

That both teams’ bowling trumps their batting is a theme that is likely to dominate this series.

The pink ball should cause problems both when new in the early afternoon and under the lights in the evening, particularly when in the hands of masters of swing Jimmy Anderson and Trent Boult.

New Zealand were bowled out on day one in their only experience of this format back in November 2015, while England failed to muster more than 233 in either innings of their recent day/night Ashes Test match.

Dawid Malan to score over 35.5 1st innings runs -

Malan was England’s top scorer in the Ashes, and can extend that good run of form into this series.

The 30-year-old hit three half-centuries from four innings during the T20 tri-series in January and February, before a 13 not out and 45 in the two warm-up matches last week.

Jimmy Anderson to be England’s top 1st innings wicket-taker -

Anderson took a masterful second-innings five-fer in the Ashes day/night Test, and is evidently England’s most potent threat again.

The conditions in Auckland should suit his swing bowling well, while a four-fer in the first warm-up match last week was an encouraging sign.
