India to win

England’s recent record in dead rubbers and their form at the Oval means that India are a solid bet to finish the series on a high.

The hosts have won none of their last 12 Tests when a series winner has already been decided – a run that stretches back to August 2011 – while they have claimed victory in just two of their last six outings on this ground.

That the Test may – at least from England’s perspective – resemble an Alastair Cook testimonial match could just as easily result in a further lack of focus as inspire an improvement.

Keaton Jennings match runs: Over 39.5 runs

Those who predicted that Jennings would outlast Cook at the start of this series will surely be proved correct if he can score at all adequately here.

Having hit 36 in the second innings at the Ageas Bowl, he should at least be in good enough nick to pass this mark for the third time of the series and probably book his place on the tour to Sri Lanka in November.

Sam Curran match runs: Over 39.5

Curran’s lower-order batting has been series-defining, and there is no reason to believe he can’t extend his fine run on his home ground.

The 20-year-old is the series’ third-highest scorer, despite playing one match fewer than most others, and hit 40 and 31 at the Oval in a Championship match against Lancashire a fortnight ago.

Ishant Sharma match wickets: Over 3.5

Sharma has been one of several good performers with the ball for India in this series, and should finish off well at the Oval.

The 30-year-old has passed this mark in three of the four Tests, including last week at the Ageas Bowl, and picked up four wickets in his last Test match on this ground in 2014.
