Here are Guy Giles' cricket betting tips for the fourth Ashes Test, which starts at 11:00am on Wednesday.

Anderson out for series

England’s greatest-ever bowler will play no further part in the Ashes after aggravating a calf injury while playing for Lancashire’s second XI.

Whether Anderson will ever play Australia again is unclear, given he will be 39 years old by the time the return series rolls around in November 2021.

His absence leaves Stuart Broad as England’s most senior bowler, a role he has relished so far.

Broad has already taken 14 wickets at an average of 25.35, with many of his finest Ashes spells coming in the fourth Test of home series.

Smith is back

England completed a dream win at Headingley to keep the series alive, but their worst nightmare is set to return at Old Trafford.

Steve Smith missed the third Test after suffering a concussion at Lord’s, but is still comfortably the top run scorer in the series so far with 378 at an average of 126.

He’s hit a first-innings 50 in four of his last five Ashes Tests, and also scored 89 in the first innings the last time he played a Test at Old Trafford.

Back with a point to prove and the series on the line, don’t expect him to give his wicket away cheaply.

Roy down the order

Jason Roy is yet to bring his limited-overs form to the Test arena.

The 29-year-old has hit scores of 10, 28, 0, 2, 9 and 8 at the top of the order, with his temperament and technique both coming into question.

It has now been confirmed that he will bat in the middle order, where many believe he will thrive, with Joe Denly taking his place as opener.

Roy scored 72 against Ireland when batting at No. 3, and has far more experience down the order in first-class cricket compared to opening.

Buttler under pressure

Jos Buttler is another England player who has struggled in this series.

The explosive batsman has only managed to compile scores of 5, 1, 12, 31, 5 and 1 so far, with his place in the team under threat.

He is, however, set to be given another chance at Old Trafford, a ground he knows well as a Lancashire player.

His only previous Test appearance in Manchester was a successful one, as he scored 70 to help England to an innings win over India in 2014.

England’s record at Old Trafford

Before this series Edgbaston was hailed as England’s fortress, but their record at Old Trafford is just as impressive.

England are unbeaten in 11 Tests there dating all the way back to 2001.

Of those 11 matches they have won nine, with three of those victories coming by an innings.

Joe Root’s only previous Test here as England captain saw them dismantle South Africa by 177 runs in 2017, so their chances of taking the lead in the series for the first time look good.
