Here are Guy Giles' cricket betting tips for the second Ashes Test, which starts at 11:00am on Wednesday. 

Woakes loves Lord’s

Chris Woakes loves playing at Lord’s.

The all-rounder has a remarkable Test record at the home of cricket, taking 24 wickets in four matches at an average of just 9.75. It was also the venue for his one and only Test century so far, a beautiful 137* against India last summer.

That knock put him in elite company: Woakes is one of just five players to have hit a century, taken five wickets in an innings and 10 in a match at Lord’s.

Back him to be in the thick of the action this week.

Smith is due a failure

Steve Smith looked like an immovable object at the crease during the first Test, but history suggests he might fall short this time around.

The former Australian captain has now scored centuries in his last three Ashes innings in England, with his back-to-back hundreds at Edgbaston following one at Oval in 2015.

No player in Ashes history has ever hit four centuries in a row on these shores, which feels a significant statistic.

The likely introduction of Jofra Archer and Jack Leach to the England attack should give Smith something extra to think about, as well.

On the subject of Archer, his Test debut looks like England’s best chance of clawing their way back into the series.

Their World Cup hero has now fully recovered from a side strain, and will surely play a big part at Lord’s.

He warmed up last week with seven wickets and a quickfire century in a county second XI match, though the Aussies will admittedly provide much sterner opposition.

Concerns over his red-ball pedigree also look wide of the mark given he has 131 wickets in just 28 first-class matches at an average of 23.44.

Australia’s opening wobbles

David Warner and Cameron Bancroft scored just 25 runs between them in the first Test as they struggled to deal with the moving Dukes ball.

It is still early days, but Bancroft in particular looks under pressure having scored just 33 and seven during Australia’s tour match against Worcestershire last week.

Warner, meanwhile, was rested, so hasn’t had a chance to spend any time in the middle.

Back with a full complement of bowlers, England should fancy their chances of getting the Australian openers out early.

Denly under pressure

A few of England’s batsmen are also feeling the heat.

That is particularly true of Joe Denly, who failed to justify his selection with scores of 18 and 11 in the first Test.

But bigger problems elsewhere mean he has kept his place in the squad, and so is likely to be handed a second chance on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old will know, though, that another couple of failures will likely mean the end of his Test career. The pressure is on.
