Rory Burns to score over 23.5 first-innings runs

Burns didn’t make a spectacular start to his Test career against Sri Lanka in November, but showed enough promise to suggest that big runs are imminent.

The Surrey opener passed this mark in just two of his six innings in the subcontinent but never looked uncomfortable, suffering a couple of unfortunate dismissals when well set for big scores.

Having hit 35 and 68 in two innings in last week’s warm-up matches, scoring 24 or more seems a fair bet in the first innings of this Test.

Jimmy Anderson to take over 4.5 match wickets

That this series will be played with Dukes balls, rather than Kookaburra, comes as a big boost to Anderson, for whom conditions were entirely unhelpful in Sri Lanka last year.

The Dukes ball swings and carries more for a longer period of time, while reports from the Caribbean suggest that the pitches for this series are being prepared to suit fast bowling.

Against an inexperienced batting line-up, expect England’s leading wicket-taker – who took at least five wickets in all three Tests against West Indies in the summer of 2017 – to have a big influence.

Kraigg Brathwaite to score under 22.5 first-innings runs

Brathwaite is a potential victim of the success that Anderson and Stuart Broad should enjoy with the new ball.

West Indies’ chief opener registered a high score of 14 in eight innings in India and Bangladesh over the autumn, and has fallen below this mark in five of his last eight first-innings efforts on home soil, with two of the exceptions coming against Bangladesh.

In six Tests against England, he has passed this mark just twice in the first innings.

Jason Holder to take over 3.5 match wickets

West Indies possess a promising pace attack, but Holder is the most consistent and talismanic of them all.

The skipper has taken 30 wickets in his last four Tests, with at least five in all of them, and – given that he doesn’t open the bowling – should benefit from the fact that the ball is likely to swing throughout the innings.
