Here are Guy Giles' cricket tips for the second Test match on Thursday at Old Trafford. 

Highest first-innings opening partnership: England

Dom Sibley’s four-ball duck meant this tip fell flat in the first Test, but it’s worth backing again as we head to Old Trafford.

Sibley battled back to make 50 in the second innings, while partner Rory Burns notched 72 runs across his two trips to the crease.

The pairing had registered the highest first-innings opening partnership in two of their three Tests together before this summer.

England top first-innings run-scorer: Ben Stokes

Stokes was England’s top scorer in the first innings at the Ageas Bowl, falling for a well-made 43. He then followed that up with 46 in the second innings.

He looks in good shape to improve on that performance in Manchester, with the returning Joe Root set to take back the captaincy.

Shamarh Brooks to score over 21.5 runs in the first innings

Brooks compiled a swift 39 in the first innings of the first Test, playing some classy strokes before edging behind off Jimmy Anderson.

The 31-year-old then fell for a duck in the second innings, but this mark looks low for a player of his quality – he has passed it in three of his last four Test innings.

England top first-innings wicket-taker: James Anderson

Anderson returns to his home ground on Thursday as he looks to improve on his three-wicket performance in the first Test.

England’s greatest-ever bowler has suffered more than most from new ICC regulations on shining the ball, but 16 wickets in his last three Tests at Old Trafford suggests that he will have more success in this match.

West Indies’ top first-innings wicket-taker: Shannon Gabriel

Gabriel proved his class with nine wickets in the first Test, although his four first-innings wickets were overshadowed by an incredible six-wicket haul from captain Jason Holder.

The quick bowler has never played at Old Trafford before, but should be amongst the wickets again as the Windies seek to retain the Wisden trophy with another win.
