Who is taking part in the 2023 IPL?
The 16th edition of the IPL will feature the same 10 franchises that played in the 2022 tournament.
These are Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants are the newest additions to the tournament, first featuring in 2022.
When is the 2023 IPL taking place?
The 2023 IPL will take place between 31 March and 28 May.
Who are the defending champions?
Gujarat Titans won their maiden IPL title in their inaugural season, beating Rajasthan Royals in the final by seven wickets.
The final, which took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, set the Guinness World Record for highest attendance of a T20 cricket match with 101,566 spectators.
Where is the 2023 IPL taking place?
The 2023 Indian Premier League will take place all across India as it returns to its original format following three years of disruption.
Last year’s tournament was played in a limited number of venues due to restrictions, with three grounds in Mumbai and one in Pune hosting the group stage, before Ahmedabad and Kolkata hosted the playoffs.
This year, there are 12 venues set to host IPL games during the group stage, with potentially more to follow in the playoffs.
Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad will play at their traditional home grounds.
The other two teams, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, will each play two of their seven home games at a different venue to their traditional home stadiums.
The 12 venues are:
Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad – Gujarat Titans
Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru – Royal Challengers Bangalore
A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai – Chennai Super Kings
Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi – Delhi Capitals
Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala – Punjab Kings
Assam Cricket Association Stadium, Guwahati – Rajasthan Royals
Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad – Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur – Rajasthan Royals
Eden Gardens, Kolkata – Kolkata Knight Riders
Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow – Lucknow Super Giants
Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium, Mohali – Punjab Kings
Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai – Mumbai Indians
How does the IPL work?
With the introduction of two new teams in 2022, taking the total to 10, a new format was introduced.
In total, there will be 74 games played, with each team competing in at least 14 games.
Before the tournament, the teams are split into two groups of five based on their seedings, which are informed by previous IPL performances.
The groups for 2023 are the same as they were in 2022, and are as follows:
Group A: Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants
Group B: Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings
The group stage will see each team play seven home games and seven away games. Teams in the same group will play those in the other group twice, while teams in the same group will face each other once.
The two groups inform each team’s fixture list but have no bearing on the standings, with all 10 teams competing in one league table.
Teams are awarded two points for a win, with net run rate acting as the tiebreaker.
At the end of the group stage, after 14 games each, the top four teams in the table will progress to the playoffs.
In the first playoff game, the top two teams will face off in Qualifier 1, with the winner progressing straight to the Final.
The third- and fourth-placed teams then play each other in the Eliminator, with the winner progressing to Qualifier 2, and the loser eliminated.
In Qualifier 2, the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator then play for a place in the Final.
