Who are the best spinners in IPL history?

1. Yuzvendra Chahal

The best spinner in IPL history is Yuzvendra Chahal, who has taken 166 wickets in 131 matches for Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals.

The leg-spinner is currently level with the second player on this list, but takes top spot due to the fact he has played fewer matches.

2. Amit Mishra

The second-best spinner in IPL history is Amit Mishra, with 166 wickets in 154 matches for Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils/Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mishra last played in the IPL in 2021, but has been picked up by Lucknow Super Giants for the 2023 tournament and could add to his tally, although he is likely to only have a bit-part role in the franchise's second season.

3. Piyush Chawla

The third-best spinner of all time in the IPL is Piyush Chawla, who has claimed 157 wickets in 165 matches in the competition.

Like Mishra, Chawla last played in the IPL in 2021, but was also a surprise buy in the 2023 auction, going for 50 lakh to the Mumbai Indians. He has previously played for Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.

4. Ravichandran Ashwin

Next on the list is Ravichandran Ashwin, who has taken 157 wickets in 184 matches in the competition for Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants.

He is set to add to his tally in 2023 as he lines up for the Royals and should play a big part for the Rajasthan franchise.

5. Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine comes in behind Ashwin with 152 wickets in his 148 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders.

The West Indies international was named MVP in 2012 as his 24 wickets helped the Knight Riders to their first title.

Who are the best spinners currently playing in the IPL?

The best spinner currently playing in the IPL is Afghanistan international Rashid Khan.

The leggy is currently rated as the second-best T20 bowler in the world by the ICC, and has lit up the IPL in each of his six seasons to date.

Khan has taken 112 wickets in just 92 IPL matches, including 19 wickets in the 2022 edition for champions Gujarat Titans, who he will play for again in 2023.

Also among the best current spinners in the IPL is Yuzvendra Chahal, who plays for Rajasthan Royals and tops our all-time list.

The India international finished the 2022 tournament with 27 wickets – the most among all bowlers, handing him his first Purple Cap.

His India and Rajasthan teammate, Ravichandran Ashwin - joint-fourth all time in wickets among spinners - is another who ranks among the best spinners in the IPL at the moment. He will play his second season for the Royals.

One player who has recently entered the conversation about best IPL spinners is Varun Chakravarthy of Kolkata Knight Riders, who has taken 42 wickets in 42 matches so far in his IPL career.

Another young player on this list is Rahul Chahar, who has claimed 57 wickets in 55 matches in the IPL.

Chahar, who has played one ODI and six T20Is for India, was retained by Punjab Kings for the 2023 tournament.

The newest addition to the best spinners currently playing in the IPL is Sri Lanka international Wanindu Hasaranga, who finished second in the wickets table in 2022 with 26 in 16 matches.

He will line up for his third season with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023.
