Here are Guy Giles' cricket betting tips for the first Test match, which starts at 10:00pm on Wednesday.

England nullified in warm-up

England could only manage a draw against a resolute New Zealand A side in their final warm-up match in Whangerei on Monday.

And, with another flat surface expected in Mount Maunganui – which is hosting a Test match for the very first time – the tourists’ attack is unlikely to fare much better.

The Kiwis, who are back to full strength, haven’t lost a home Test since March 2017, and are a good bet to continue that run at the Bay Oval this week.

Archer the enforcer

If England are to find a cutting edge then they will need Jofra Archer’s remarkable start in Test cricket to continue.

The seamer starred for England in the Ashes over the summer, taking 22 wickets in four matches, including two six-wicket hauls.

His extra pace was rewarded with five wickets in Whangerei, and he will clearly be the tourists’ main threat once the Test series begins.

Buttler back to his best

There were several encouraging innings from England batsmen in Whangerei, most notably that of Jos Buttler.

The 29-year-old, who has taken over wicketkeeping duties from the axed Jonny Bairstow, hit 11 fours and four maximums on the way to 110 off 153 balls.

Having hit 192 runs during the final two Ashes Tests, he looks a good bet to continue that run of form on a flat wicket against an older ball.

Williamson returns

The hosts’ batting order, meanwhile, has been boosted by the return of captain Kane Williamson from a hip injury.

His last five Test innings in New Zealand read: 74, 200*, 2, 48 and 91 – illustrating just how important he is to the Black Caps.

Playing on his home ground, England will struggle to limit the Tauranga native’s influence in the opener.

Ferguson in line for debut

The trusted duo of Trent Boult and Tim Southee will, inevitably, lead New Zealand’s bowling attack in the Bay of Plenty, but their supporting cast is not yet clear.

Lockie Ferguson took 21 wickets to finish as the World Cup’s second-highest wicket-taker, but also has a stellar first-class record for Auckland.

His extra pace makes him a real weapon in placid conditions so, if selected, then he’s sure to get among the wickets in Tauranga.
