South Africa to win

In their first ODI since winning the World Cup at Lord’s in July, England look a less settled outfit than they did then.

The T20 format takes priority this year, so several of the visitors’ first string have been rested from the 50-over matches. Of England’s victorious XI from the summer, a key quartet are missing: Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.

England’s attitude towards these matches is summed up best by the fact that Tom Banton and Chris Jordan, who are naturally only members of the T20 setup, are both included in the squad.

Eoin Morgan, meanwhile, remains ODI captain purely as a matter of convenience. His target is the World T20 in October, and he will almost certainly stand down after it.

Despite his side still appearing stronger on paper, it is hard to back them at short odds, so South Africa are worth a punt to win the first match of the series.

Under 532.5 match runs

None of the last three ODIs at Newlands have produced more than 500 runs, and this match is unlikely to alter that pattern.

England were rolled over for 240 in their first warm-up match last week, with only Jason Roy and Chris Woakes passing 30. When they played on this ground in 2016, they could only muster 236.

South Africa’s inexperienced batting line-up can’t be relied on either. They were terrible at the World Cup in the summer, and are weakened further by the absence of Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis.

Quinton de Kock to be South Africa’s top run-scorer

South Africa’s new captain must lead from the front if his side are to improve on their abject World Cup showing in the next four years.

De Kock’s track record suggests that he will. He was South Africa’s top run-scorer when these sides met in the summer, and also top scored in four of his side’s eight home ODIs last year.

He has scored 50+ in five of his last six home ODIs, hitting 80+ in four of them.

With no Du Plessis or Amla to contend with, he is a safe bet throughout the series in this market.

Joe Root to score over 35.5 runs

Root is relatively consistent across all formats, but his metronomic ODI performances mean that a profit is likely if you consistently back him to succeed.

That should start in this match. He has fallen short of this runs line in just four of his last 15 ODIs, passing it in all of his last four innings outside of tournaments.

On his last tour to South Africa, he scored 52, 38, 125, 109 and 27 in the five matches.

With the burden of the captaincy handed over to Morgan, it would be a surprise if he didn’t go well here.

Lungi Ngidi to take over 1.5 wickets

Ngidi took three wickets against England at the World Cup, repeating the trick against Pakistan before injury ended his tournament after four matches.

The 23-year-old has taken at least two wickets in 12 of his last 21 ODIs, including in six of his 10 games on home turf.

He is also in good form, taking a three-fer in a domestic game for the Titans last week.
