Here are Guy Giles' cricket betting tips for the second Test match, which starts at 08:30am on Friday.

Newlands is a fortress

South Africa have lost just two of their last 20 Test matches at Newlands, with Australia the only team to beat them during that run.

The Proteas have won their last four Tests at the Cape Town ground, including victories over both the Aussies and India. 

England, meanwhile, are winless in their last five at the venue – a run stretching back more than 60 years to 1957.

Considering both sides’ performances in the first match of the series, that run is likely to continue on Friday.

South Africa to win

Sibley struggles

It is still early days, but Dom Sibley’s Test career has not got off to the best start.

The Warwickshire opener was prolific in the County Championship over the summer, being the only player to rack up more than 1000 runs, but the step up to Test level has proved a big one for the 24-year-old.

His five innings so far have yielded just 71 runs, with a dogged 29 off 90 at Centurion his highest score so far.

Sibley has also become the latest player in the England camp to be affected by illness and, although it looks like he will recover in time to play on Friday, a change of fortunes at Newlands is unlikely.

Anderson survives Centurion test

James Anderson took just two wickets in the first Test at Centurion, but that will not be of any concern to the England coaching team.

They will have instead been more interested in seeing Anderson come through unscathed which, after bowling 33 overs, he managed with ease.

England’s swing king can now approach the second Test at Newlands with more confidence after putting his calf injury behind him.

Anderson has history in Cape Town, taking four wickets in a World Cup match against Pakistan there in 2003, while claiming eight Test scalps against the Proteas in 2010.

Philander returns home

Few bowlers are as dominant at one ground as Vernon Philander is at Newlands.

The South Africa seamer has taken 47 wickets in eight Tests at the venue at an average of just 16.34.

His strike rate of 33.9 in Cape Town is the second-best in Test history among fast bowlers who have taken at least 40 wickets at one venue – the only player with a better record is compatriot Dale Steyn at Centurion.

Philander’s record at Newlands also includes four five-wicket hauls, while he has taken at least three wickets in 11 of the 16 innings he has bowled at the ground.

South Africa’s opening woes

Much like England, South Africa’s opening batsmen have struggled in recent Tests.

Their highest opening partnership across their last four Test matches is 14, while they have lost a wicket without scoring twice in that time – including in the first innings at Centurion last week.

Dean Elgar is out of form, having passed 50 just twice in his last 20 Test innings, while Aiden Markram has been ruled out of the series with a broken finger sustained last week.

The loss of Markram means their woes at the top of the order are likely to continue at Newlands, with their other opening options – Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen and Pieter Malan – all inexperienced at Test level.
