How exciting is it to have a South African T20 competition that can rival the best in the world?

It’s exciting. I think this is something that South African cricket has needed for a while now.

This is in the same bracket as some big competitions, such as the IPL, PSL and Big Bash.

A lot of IPL investors are involved in this competition so it's obviously a big thing for us.

Based on your experience of other franchise competitions, how important is it to have one in South Africa?

A lot of the guys playing in franchise cricket all over the world face the same bowlers over and over, so it’s great to face some different homegrown faces.

Some of the world-class talent arriving in South Africa will help the younger guys, too.

I’m lucky to have Lance Klusener as coach, who I’ve worked with before and some of the players passed to us from within the franchise as well, too, so I’m excited.

How exciting is to be a big part of the Super Giants brand?

It’s great, obviously it means a lot that they asked me to be captain. It adds a little bit of pressure, but nothing I haven’t dealt with before.

How can this competition improve the strength and depth of the national team?

Yeah, I definitely think so from a white-ball perspective. We’re playing against world-class players who have won World Cups and multiple franchise competitions.

They’ll bring that experience here and our young players will be able to face those guys, so it’s a great opportunity.

What is the key to winning a franchise competition?

The key is to be consistent in the way that you do things as a team. Teams that win trophies know what their brand of cricket is and they stick to it.

When you’ve got game after game coming so quickly, you have to have that consistency and confidence in what you’re doing.

You had a long break before this competition. Did you feel refreshed?

Yeah, I feel good. I think that break was much needed and when I came back I was looking forward to hitting balls again.

Which of the talent you’ve signed for Durban’s Super Kings  are you most excited to work with?

Obviously Heinrich Klaasen is an experienced player. I’ve had a few good chats with Matthew Breetzke, too, who I think is very talented.

And from the overseas contingent?

I’ve played against Reece Topley at under-19 and senior level and now we’re team-mates, so that’s good fun.

Kyle Mayers, as well, can be very exciting. If he gets going in this tournament he’s going to set it alight.

If you could pick one player from an SA20 opponent, who would it be?

I’ll go with Tristan Stubbs.
