Six franchises will take part in the inaugural Betway SA20: Durban’s Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

The teams will take each other on in 33 matches between January 10 and February 11.

Each team can only name four overseas players in their XI for any match.

Team-by-team guide

DURBAN’S SUPER GIANTS

Coach: Lance Klusener

Captain: Quinton De Kock

Other star players: Heinrich Klaasen, Jason Holder, Reece Topley

Durban have some serious strength in depth in the bowling department, with overseas stars Reece Topley, Jason Holder, Keemo Paul and Akila Dananjaya joined by Kyle Abbott and Simon Harmer.

That will mean that leading batters Quinton De Kock, Johnson Charles and Heinrich Klaasen only need to set their team-mates competitive totals to defend.

JOBURG SUPER KINGS

Coach: Stephen Fleming

Captain: Faf du Plessis

Other star players: Reeza Hendricks, Kyle Verreynne, Alzarri Joseph

Fleming and Du Plessis know each well from the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and will be hoping to translate their success in India to this competition.

The coach, Fleming, has lots of experience in franchise competitions and will fancy his chances again with the likes of Du Plessis and Joseph in the side.

MI CAPE TOWN

Coach: Simon Katich

Captain: Rashid Khan

Other star players: Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada

Arguably the most star-studded team in the competition, MI Cape Town will be hoping that the success of their IPL sister team, Mumbai Indians, translates to this competition.

Mumbai have won more IPL titles than any other side, and with Rashid Khan, Dewald Brevis, Livingstone, Curran, Rabada and wildcard pick Jofra Archer, MI have a great shot in this competition.

PAARL ROYALS

Coach: JP Duminy

Captain: David Miller

Other star players: Jos Buttler, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi

There is quite an English contingent at the Royals, with Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan joining T20 World Cup-winning captain Buttler.

The homegrown bowling talents of Ngidi and Shamsi give them just as good a chance of winning the title, though.

PRETORIA CAPITALS

Coach: Graham Ford

Captain: Wayne Parnell

Other star players: Rilee Rossouw, Adil Rashid, Anrich Nortje

Pretoria have a long list of internationals to pick from, including two of South Africa’s best white-ball players, Rossouw and Nortje, and two members of England’s T20 World Cup-winning team, Phil Salt and Rashid.

Jimmy Neesham and Kusal Mendis have also signed as overseas players, leaving excellent coach Ford plenty of options to pick from.

SUNRISERS EASTERN CAPE

Coach: Adrian Birrell

Captain: TBC

Other star players: Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen

Sunrisers were extremely active at the SA20 auction in September, shelling out the highest and third-highest fees for Stubbs and Jansen.

They have six English players in their squad, none of whom are international regulars but who can put themselves in contention with big tournaments here.
