When is the SA20 auction? What is the SA20 Auction players' list?

Six teams will compete in Betway SA20: Durban Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

When selecting their squads, all teams were allowed five pre-auction picks, limited to three overseas players, one South Africa international and one uncapped South Africa player. Two teams used up their allocation, two teams made four picks and two teams made two picks.

The 22 selected players include the best of the homegrown South Africa talent, as well as world-class overseas players such as Rashid Khan, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone.

Each team had $2m to spend on a squad of at most 17 players, with the money available to them at auction decided by what’s left after their pre-auction signings.

The auction took place on September 19, with 314 players up for grabs.

Of those available, these 10 went for the most money.

The most expensive players in the SA20 auction

10 Dwaine Pretorius - $235k approx (Durban Super Giants)

With nearly 2,500 runs and 140 wickets in the T20 format, Pretorius has the all-round game to flourish in the SA20.

The 33-year-old has 30 T20I caps for South Africa, hitting at 164.15 with the bat and taking 35 wickets with the ball.

Pretorius also has great experience of franchise cricket, playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and Welsh Fire in The Hundred in 2022.

9 Tabraiz Shamsi - $250k approx (Paarl Royals)

Shamsi, sixth in the ICC T20 bowling rankings, was hot property in the SA20 auction.

The leg-spinner has played 59 times for South Africa in this format, notably turning on the style by taking eight wickets in three T20s against England in 2022.

He has spent time with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, with his wrist spin a valuable asset to all T20 teams.

8 Reeza Hendricks - $260k approx (Joburg Super Kings)

Hendricks didn’t feature at the recent T20 World Cup, but is still one of South Africa’s most exciting batters.

The 33-year-old averages 29.82 at T20I level and also has an ODI century to his name.

He has the chance to form an exciting opening partnership with Proteas legend Faf du Plessis.

7 Heinrich Klaasen - $260k approx (Durban Super Giants)

Klaasen has been a feature of South Africa’s T20 setup for nearly five years, gaining 38 caps, the most recent of which came at the T20 World Cup in November.

The 31-year-old even captained the Proteas in 2021, so adds leadership qualities to a Super Giants squad that already features Quinton de Kock and Jason Holder.

A career batting average of 28.6 at a strike-rate of 136.45 in this format, though, is what really convinced Durban to make him the seventh-most expensive player at auction.

6 Sisanda Magala - $310k approx (Sunrisers Eastern Cape)

Magala has found himself up against a superb crop of fast bowlers when it comes to selection for South Africa, so his international numbers don’t do him justice.

The 31-year-old has only appeared seven times for the Proteas, but has made 115 career T20 appearances overall.

A record of 122 wickets at an economy rate of 7.92 explains why Sunrisers Eastern Cape were so keen to sign him.

5 Donavon Ferreira - $320k approx (Joburg Super Kings)

Ferreira has only played 26 T20s, but has made quite an impression.

The 24-year-old averages 41.46 and hits at 153.56, a brilliant record in a not small sample size of 21 innings.

He can bowl, too, taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 7.34 from 23 overs.

4 Wayne Parnell - $325k approx (Pretoria Capitals)

Pretoria Capitals purchased two of the four most expensive players at auction, the cheaper one of which was left-arm quick Parnell.

The 33-year-old has lots of experience, playing 245 T20s in his career, 53 of which have been for the Proteas. He is particularly impressive at the death.

He has also featured for a string of franchises, including Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils, Barbados Tridents and Karachi Kings.

3 Marco Jansen – $350k approx (Sunrisers Eastern Cape)

At just 22 years old, Jansen is already becoming one of the most feared all-rounders in the world.

The left-armer was picked up by Mumbai Indians in the IPL in 2021 before he’d even made his international debut, taking two wickets in two matches, before making a bigger impact for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022.

He is now well established for the Proteas, with his 6’9 frame a clear point of difference with bat and ball.

2 Rilee Rossouw - $400k approx (Pretoria Capitals)

Rossouw has timed his superb 2022 to perfection, with a lucrative SA20 contract fine reward for his form.

The opener has smashed two T20 centuries for South Africa since October, including an unbeaten one against India and another against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup.

He has also featured for Oval Invincibles and Sydney Thunder in 2022 and looks ready to take this competition by storm.

1 Tristan Stubbs - $520k approx (Sunrisers Eastern Cape)

Sunrisers have made Stubbs not just the highest-paid player, but the highest-paid player by a considerable distance.

The 20-year-old burst onto the international scene by hitting 72 off 28 balls in his debut Proteas innings against England in July 2022. Though he hasn’t hit those heights since, that was a clear indication of his talent.

A career strike rate of 155.76 indicates that he is going to be a special player.
