What is Major League Cricket?

Major League Cricket is an upcoming Twenty20 cricket league in the United States.

Its inaugural season will take place in 2023, with six teams representing major US cities.

Major League Cricket will begin on 13 July, with the final set for 30 July.

Where is Major League Cricket held?

The inaugural season of Major League Cricket will be held at two venues.

The majority of matches will be played at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas. Formerly known as QuikTrip Park, The Ballpark in Grand Prairie, and AirHogs Stadium, it previously served as the home of the Texas AirHogs of the American Association of Professional Baseball (2008-2019) and of the USL League Two soccer team Texas United (2017-2019).

It was announced in October 2020 that USA Cricket had acquired the lease to the stadium and planned to redevelop it into a cricket ground. The redevelopment, which is set to cost $20m, will see the capacity extended to 7,200, and the installation of a grass wicket that meets international accreditation standards.

Not only will the ground serve as the home of an MLC team and the main venue for the inaugural season, it will also be the home training facility for the USA national cricket team.

The other ground that will feature in the first season of MLC is Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina.

Church Street Park is a cricket ground that has recently undergone renovation in preparation for MLC, with a permanent seating capacity of 3,500.

What teams are in Major League Cricket?

MLC will begin its inaugural season with six teams, with hopes to expand to eight at some point in the near future.

The six inaugural teams are based in Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC.

Which players are involved in Major League Cricket?

MLC will feature several of the top T20 players in the world, including Jason Roy (England), Sunil Narine (West Indies), Andre Russell (West Indies), Marcus Stoinis (Australia), Rashid Khan (Afghanistan), Trent Boult (New Zealand), Kagiso Rabada (South Africa),  Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka) and many more.

These international players will play alongside the best domestic cricketers in the US.

What are the roster rules in Major League Cricket?

Each team must select a minimum of 16 and a maximum of 19 players for its squad.

Each roster must contain one under-23 domestic ‘rookie’ as well as a minimum of nine other domestic players, and a maximum of nine international players.

Playing XIs must contain a maximum of six international players.  

Is there a salary cap in Major League Cricket?

Yes, the salary cap for each MLC team is $1.15m.

What is the format of Major League Cricket?

MLC will start with a single round-robin group stage, with each of the six teams playing each other once across 15 matches.

After the group stage, the top four teams will progress to the play-offs.

The first play-off game is called the Eliminator, which sees the third- and fourth-placed sides face off in a single-elimination game – the losing team is out.

The second play-off game, the Qualifier, is contested between the top two sides, with the winning side progressing straight to the Final.

The loser of the Qualifier and the winner of the Eliminator then face off in the Challenger, with the winning team moving onto the Final.
