England are out to  to win the fifth and final Ashes Test after Australia won the toss and bowled the hosts out for 283 on the opening day at the Oval.

Ben Stokes's men started brightly with the bat as Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett put on 62 for the first wicket, but three dismissals in quick succession reduced England to 73-3 before Harry Brook and Moeen Ali combined to offer resistance.

Brook led the way with the bat for England with a stylish 85 while Chris Woakes (36) and Mark Wood (28) chipped in with some useful lower-order runs before Woakes skied one straight to Travis Head to bring the innings to an end.

The Aussies reached 61-1 in reply at stumps with England taking the wicket of David Warner. Usman Khawaja (26 not out) and Marnus Labuschagne (two not out) will resume the tourists' innings on Friday morning.

Having already retained the Ashes, Australia are into 8/11 to win the fifth Test and seal a 3-1 series victory. While the game moved on significantly on day one, some rain is expected over the next few days and the draw is a 13/2 chance.

England still in the game under cloudy south London skies

Harry Brook said in his post-day interview that England would have been pleased with 250 prior to the start of the first innings and, while that probably wasn't the case when the hosts found themselves 62 without loss, there is no doubt that England are still in this contest on a pitch which is offering plenty.

The Three Lions are desperate to level the series and although Khawaja and Labuschagne were batting in typically resolute fashion at the close of play, the ball is doing enough to encourage the England bowlers, with Mark Wood looking particularly dangerous.

One potential problem is the injury sustained by Moeen Ali which meant that he wasn't able to bowl on Thursday but the veteran off-spinner was unlikely to be required to a huge degree at this stage anyway and Joe Root remains an able deputy if the ball does turn.

If England's seamers make early inroads on Friday morning, there is every chance that Australia will be bowled out for a similarly low total and the 8/5 on offer about Ben Stokes's men makes some appeal with more cloud cover anticipated at The Oval on day two.

Labuschagne most likely to hold firm in morning session

Of the two not-out batsmen, Labuschagne looks more likely to kick on and get a big score and the No.3 looks a decent bet to be the top Australia first-innings batter at .

Labuschagne came into the series with questions to answer but the 29-year-old, who is second in the ICC Test batting rankings, has played himself into form in recent innings, culminating in a brilliant 111 at Old Trafford which effectively sealed the Ashes for Australia.

He batted sensibly on Thursday evening, scoring just two runs off 23 balls, and he could anchor the Aussie innings on Friday morning, particularly if England can get Khawaja at the other end.
