MICHAEL VAN GERWEN v ROB CROSS

Van Gerwen to win, hit a 120+ checkout and average over 100 and Cross to hit the most 180s –

A run of five games without a win to finish the regular season means Cross must face the table-topping Van Gerwen after slipping to fourth.

Having lost eight of his last nine meetings with the world No.1 – and survived five match darts in the one exception at the World Championship – his chances of causing an upset are slim.

MVG has only averaged below three figures once all season, and clocked 103.49 over the course of 38 legs at the O2 last year.

He’s also hit a league-high tally of 11 checkouts of 120 or more during the campaign, and should have plenty of time for another in this extended semi-final.

The only aspect where he looks inferior is in the maximum stakes, having thrown more than three just five times all season – half as many as Cross.

MICHAEL SMITH v GARY ANDERSON

Anderson to win, hit the most 180s and two 100+ checkouts and Smith to average under 100 –

The fact that all but two of Smith’s 20 points this season were accrued against players outside of the top four means that, despite finishing second, he represents the plum tie at the O2.

Particularly for Anderson, who has won nine of their 12 meetings to date and six of the seven since the start of 2016.

Even in his one defeat on the opening night of this season, the Flying Scotsman led 5-1 before missing 14 darts at double to secure at least a point following a flare-up of an old back injury.

He’s been more ruthless since, hitting 18 ton-plus checkouts and throwing the second-most numbers of 180s behind only Daryl Gurney.

Smith has averaged over 100 just once all season, and will find it even more of a struggle to keep pace with his mentor in this best-of-19 format.

FINAL SPECIAL

Van Gerwen and Anderson to reach the final, Van Gerwen to win, Anderson to hit the most 180s and over 3.5 100+ checkouts in the game –

Van Gerwen lost to Anderson in the final match of the regular season last week, but rarely disappoints when the stakes are raised.

His victory at the Dutch Darts Masters at the weekend was his 11th title of the year, and the 23rd final in succession that he has won.

Anderson has only hit one more maximum than MVG over the course of the season but, like Cross, his tend to come much more consistently – with 17 of the Dutchman’s total of 56 coming in the space of two matches.

This pair are way out in front when it comes to three-figure finishes, having thrown two or more in a single game eight times between them.

In a best-of-21 final, four in the match should prove no problem at all.
