Bolton to beat Bradford

Bradford look underprepared, with just 17 senior players currently on their books. They have also failed to replace last season’s top scorer James Vaughan, who left for Tranmere in the summer.

Bolton, meanwhile, have brought in 15 signings in the off-season, including former Bantams striker and last season’s Golden Boot winner Eoin Doyle, who netted 25 league goals while on loan at Swindon in 2019/20.

Wanderers will start the League Two season as favourites for the title but before that gets under way, an odds-against price looks generous for them to put down a marker against mediocre opposition.

Grimsby to beat Morecambe

Morecambe had the second-worst travelling record of any side in League Two last season, having lost 13 and won three of their 19 league games.

The Shrimps lost 10 of their last 13 matches in all competitions away from the Globe Arena before last season was curtialed, including a 2-1 defeat at Blundell Park in February.

Grimsby ended last season with four victories from six at home and, having completed some eye-catching transfer business including the signing of winger Sean Scannell and midfielder Danny Rose, look a decent bet to start well this weekend.

Norwich to beat Luton

Norwich lost all of their last 10 Premier League matches in 2019/20, which goes some way to explaining their chunky price here, but things should get easier for them this term.

For now, the Canaries have managed to retain key players Max Aarons, Mario Vrancic and Teemu Pukki among others, as well as making some decent signings like 15-goal Jordan Hugill.

They look well-equipped for a decent season and, despite Luton taking 11 points from their final five matches last term, can start with victory in the cup at Kenilworth Road.

Swansea to beat Newport

This is a great price for a Championship side to beat one from two divisions below.

Despite their cup heroics of years gone by, Newport have lost both of their last two games against sides from higher divisions, while they ended last season with six defeats from their last nine.

Last season’s losing play-off semi-finalists Swansea beat both Northampton and Cambridge in the EFL Cup last season and are unbeaten in nine cup ties against lower-league opposition.

Oxford to beat AFC Wimbledon

Only three teams in League One lost more away games than AFC Wimbledon (12) last season, with two of those, Bolton and Southend, going on to be relegated.

EFL Trophy aside, Glyn Hodges’ side managed one victory in their last nine matches of last season, while they finished just one place above the relegation zone last term.

Oxford ended their regular season with five straight league victories, including a 5-0 thumping of Wimbledon in February.
