QPR to beat Millwall (15:00)

Only the Championship’s top two Norwich and Watford took more points than QPR from New Year’s Day onwards last season.

Mark Warburton’s side look stronger now than when they finished last season, with Stefan Johansen signing on permanent terms, talented midfielder Andre Dozzell coming in from Ipswich and centre back Jimmy Dunne arriving from Burnley.

Millwall finished last season with a 6-1 pasting away to Coventry and picked up one point from their final three on the road.

Oxford to beat Cambridge (15:00)

Oxford were beaten by eventual winners Blackpool in the play-off semi-finals last term but finished their regular season with six victories from their final seven matches.

Karl Robinson has added exciting winger Billy Bodin and full back Steve Seddon to an already accomplished side, so it’s hard to see them making a poor start here.

Cambridge’s underlying numbers last season suggested that they were fortunate to win promotion and, having lost 32-goal striker Paul Mullin to non-league Wrexham, are in worse shape now.

Ipswich to beat Morecambe (15:00)

Former Morecambe manager Derek Adams achieved one of the most surprising feats across the entire EFL last season by getting the club to League One, but he has since left to join Bradford City.

With Adams having left, it’s hard to be positive about the Shrimpers, who were perennial relegation strugglers prior to his arrival at the club.

Ipswich are second-favourites for the title and have built a squad capable of fulfilling that tag over summer. They should win this comfortably.

Manchester City to beat Leicester (17:15)

Manchester City have won two of the last three Community Shields, and should seal this one within 90 minutes.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won four of their last five meetings with Leicester.

The Foxes will be without key defender Wesley Fofana, who broke his leg in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, so you would expect a defence that has conceded five goal in their last two games to suffer.

Sheffield United to beat Birmingham (20:00)

No club above the bottom six conceded more league goals than Birmingham (61) last season.

The Blues lost their final two matches of 2020/21 by an aggregate score of 9-2, while respective 3-2 and 4-0 defeats to Northampton and West Brom in their last two friendlies hardly seem like ideal preparation.

Despite finishing bottom of the Premier League last term, Sheffield United did win three of their final six matches and, now with Slavisa Jokanovic at the helm, look a decent bet to get off to a positive start.

Crewe v Cheltenham (15:00)

Crewe scored in 15 of their last 18 home matches last season.

BTTS landed in 12 of those games, and in three of their last four overall.

Cheltenham will fancy their chances of scoring having done so in 14 of their last 18 matches of last season.

Doncaster v AFC Wimbledon (15:00)

Doncaster conceded in 10 of their last 11 home matches of last season.

In Richie Wellens, though, Rovers have appointed a manager who will get them going at the other end of the pitch.

Only six League One teams had a higher BTTS ratio than AFC Wimbledon last season.

MYTHBUSTER

Hull draw no bet v Preston (15:00)

Hull look set for a decent season after winning League One and making a few solid additions to their squad.

Grant McCann’s side were very solid on the road last season, winning six of their last eight away games before losing a dead rubber at Charlton on the final day.

There is plenty of uncertainty around Preston, who have rookie manager Frankie McAvoy in the dugout and have done limited transfer business.

ANYTIME GOALSCORER

Josh Koroma (Huddersfield) to score v Derby

Koroma was fantastic at the beginning of last season, scoring eight goals in 21 appearances, before his campaign was ended by injury.

Only Adam Armstrong and Teemu Pukki, two of the three top goalscorers in the division, took more shots per Championship game.

Derby are in a mess heading into this campaign, with confusion over who is available and the defence looking particularly weak.

Lys Mousset (Sheffield United) to score v Birmingham

Sheffield United have several strikers to pick from, but it’s Mousset who has looked sharp in pre-season and will likely start here.

The forward has scored three goals in his two friendly appearances this summer and can finally deliver on the potential that he has shown with Bournemouth and the Blades in the Premier League.

Birmingham conceded three at Watford and five at Blackburn in their last five away games of last season, so are vulnerable to one of the promotion favourites here.
