Barnsley can bounce back from play-off defeat

League One was strong at the top end last season. Plymouth won the league with 101 points, while promoted pair Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday finished on 98 and 96 respectively.

The three teams that have come down from the Championship - Blackpool, Reading and Wigan - don’t look as fearsome, so it is perhaps best to look at one of last year’s top six for the title and Barnsley appeal.

The Reds came agonisingly close to promotion, but were beaten in the last seconds of the play-off final by South Yorkshire neighbours Wednesday.

The departure of manager Michael Duff to Swansea is a blow and had he remained, they may have been the market leader in terms of title odds.

Replacement Neil Collins arrives for his first management job in the EFL but he does have plenty of experience in England as a player, most notably with Sheffield Wednesday, and has built an excellent reputation as a coach in the USA with the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

If Collins can pick up where Duff left off then Barnsley should be there or thereabouts given the quality that remains in their squad, particularly in the midfield areas where they have the likes of Luca Connell, Adam Phillips and Herbie Kane.

Bolton can challenge for promotion

Derby, Portsmouth and Bolton are all among the favourites for the title and the latter look a strong contender to secure promotion.

The Trotters have improved in each season boss Ian Evatt has been in charge and this could be their year to make the step back up to the Championship after spending the last four seasons in the third and fourth tiers.

Bolton won the EFL Trophy last season, beating League One champions Plymouth in the final, but that was perhaps detrimental to their league ambitions and results prior to their Wembley date dipped.

This year, the league will be the focus and they have largely managed to keep their squad intact, as well as making some decent additions.

The loss of goalkeeper loanee James Trafford, who has joined Burnley from parent club Manchester City, is tempered by the arrival of Nathan Baxter, who has spent the last two seasons in the Championship with Hull.

Ian Evatt's look well equipped for a promotion push.

Charlton offer value in top-six market

Charlton finished 10th last season as they paid for a poor first half of the season.

The Addicks finished the campaign well, however, and have a stronger squad going into the new season after some excellent business over the summer.

Striker Alfie May netted 20 league goals for Cheltenham last season and, in a better team, could tear up the divison this term. New goalkeeper Harry Isted, meanwhile, impressed on loan at Barnsley last season.

The top of the table could be tight, but Charlton have assembled a team capable of challenging for promotion. They look good value for a top-six spot at the current prices.
