After winning their maiden Champions League title last season, Manchester City make their UEFA Super Cup debut against Sevilla in Greece on Wednesday.

Seven-time Europa League winners Sevilla are Super Cup regulars but they have lost on their last five appearances in the fixture and are clear underdogs against City.

Pep Guardiola's men won the Premier League and FA Cup as well as the Champions League in 2022-23 and started their league title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Burnley, where Erling Haaland scored twice.

An injury to playmaker Kevin De Bruyne was one negative from Friday's trip to Turf Moor but, after losing on penalties to Arsenal in the Community Shield, the Citizens should pick up their first piece of silverware against Sevilla. 

Solid Sevilla could frustrate City early on

Haaland opened the scoring within four minutes in City's Premier League opener against Burnley but they may need more patience against a Sevilla side who beat Roma on penalties to win last season's Europa League final.

Sevilla made a disappointing start to their campaign in La Liga, losing 2-1 at home to Valencia with all three goals coming in the final half an hour.

They will be wary of City's attacking threat, even with the brilliant De Bruyne sidelined, and are unlikely to take too many risks early on so the Draw-Manchester City selection in the Half Time-Full Time market appeals.

Sevilla are a streetwise side, as they showed by knocking out Manchester United and Juventus in last season's Europa League before inflicting Roma boss Jose Mourinho's first defeat in a European final.

City were far less fluent away from home than they were at the Etihad Stadium last term, scoring just 34 of their 94 Premier League goals on the road.

They notched only two first-half goals in seven Champions League matches away from the Etihad, one of them coming in a 4-0 group-stage win in Seville, so they may have to wait until the second half to break through in Piraeus.

Champions League hero Rodri poses goal threat

Haaland dominates the Super Cup goalscorer markets, having won the Premier League and Champions League Golden Boots last season, but it could be worth taking a chance on City midfielder Rodri to score at any time against Sevilla.

The Spain international was, of course, the Citizens' hero in the Champions League final against Inter Milan, scoring the only goal of the game in the 68th minute, and he started the new season by claiming his side's third goal at Burnley.

Rodri was in the right place at the right time to smash home a loose ball after a free-kick wasn't cleared properly and he had four attempts at goal at Turf Moor, the same number as superstar striker Haaland.

Both of Valencia's goals against Sevilla last week were scored by midfielders bursting into the box to get on the end of crosses and Rodri could be a threat from open play and set-piece situations.
