Liverpool v Burnley

When Burnley were handed their tough-looking start to the season, they presumably planned to take no points from their opening three away games at Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool.

But having admirably recorded a win and a draw from the first two, Sean Dyche’s side will have their eyes on more at Anfield.

The Clarets scored four goals in those matches, before claiming an important, if fortuitous, victory over Crystal Palace at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Liverpool, whose midweek efforts against Sevilla are bound to impact this fixture, notably failed to win home matches against West Ham, Plymouth, Swansea, Southampton, Wolves, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace last season, too.

Ipswich v Bolton

The focus at Portman Road will, understandably, be on bottom-place Bolton’s current run of three straight defeats.

Yet Ipswich, after a promising start, have also lost all of their last three, meaning that this game should be considerably less predictable than the league table suggests.

Bolton, notably, have largely been let down by their home form so far, only actually losing one of four away matches.

Meanwhile, only two of Ipswich’s five victories have come at Portman Road, against lowly Brentford and Birmingham.

Hoffenheim v Hertha Berlin

Hoffenheim are in fine form, but the prospect of a third big game in eight days offers some jeopardy to their chances of victory.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side – who expended a lot of energy in beating Bayern Munich last Saturday before Thursday’s game with Braga – are not used to such a heavy schedule, and will struggle to reproduce their high-intensity style.

Hertha Berlin are well set to take advantage.

The visitors have only lost one of four matches this season – away at Borussia Dortmund – and proved their giant-killing ability by losing just one of five fixtures against Bayern Munich and Dortmund in league and cup last term.

Real Socieded v Real Madrid

Amid the understandable hysteria surrounding Real Madrid, the fact that they have actually drawn two league matches in a row and slipped four points off the pace in La Liga has gone under the radar.

And so the timing of their trickiest league game of the season so far is not ideal, particularly considering that they will be without Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

Real Sociedad are one of the sides above them on maximum points, after an explosive start that has featured 10 goals in three victories.
