Aguero at Anfield

Sergio Aguero is one of the Premier League’s deadliest finishers but, whenever he pitches up at Anfield, he always seems to forget his shooting boots.

After Sunday’s defeat, he has now not scored in eight Premier League matches at Anfield – and 11 overall – compared to seven in seven against the Reds at the Etihad.

It’s not as if he’s not a big-game player – as his record away at the rest of the top six shows.

The Argentine has five in seven at Stamford Bridge, four in four at Old Trafford, three in six at Tottenham and two in six at the Emirates. The hoodoo is real. 

Kane in August

Five seasons. 15 games. 1,142 minutes. That’s how long it took Harry Kane to score a Premier League goal in August.

The striker has been Tottenham’s main source of goals ever since he broke into the first team in 2014, just not during the first month of the season.

Kane’s August hoodoo finally came to an end last season after he curled home to secure a 3-1 win over Fulham.

He then scored again in Spurs’ next game against Manchester United and netted a double in this season’s opener against Aston Villa, but the same questions will still be asked next summer.

Bale’s barren run

Gareth Bale is a four-time Champions League winner, two-time PFA Player of the Year and six-time Welsh Footballer of the Year, among plenty of other accolades.

It is very easy to forget, therefore, that his Premier League career began with him being labelled as a curse on Tottenham.

Following his £5m arrival from Southampton, he failed to win any of his first 24 appearances for the club, and was soon linked with a move back to the Championship.

The spell was finally broken after Bale started at left-back in a 5-0 win over Burnley, but who knows where he might have ended up had it gone on much longer?

Arsenal in Sheffield

Arsenal’s season was going pretty well until they lost 1-0 to Sheffield United.

They have won just one in six in all competitions since then – a narrow 3-2 victory over Vitoria in the Europa League – with their hopes of the top four slowly slipping away.

That loss at Bramall Lane, however, was not just a one-off, but the latest in a series of poor results in the Steel City.

The Gunners have not won a Premier League match in Sheffield – at Bramall Lane or Hillsborough – since August 1993, drawing three and losing six.

That’s despite the Sheffield clubs suffering three relegations and five bottom-half finishes during the same seasons.

Liverpool and the Premier League

Liverpool are, historically, the most successful club in England, with their UEFA Super Cup win earlier this season their 43^rd major honour. They have, however, never managed to count the Premier League title among them despite four second-place finishes.

Some might argue that the Reds have simply never been good enough to consistently challenge, though their recent near-misses have always seem to have been shaped by moments of misfortune.

Flash-in-the-pan Federico Macheda scoring the decisive goal for Manchester United in 2008/09, Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea in 2013/14, even John Stones hooking the ball back 11mm before it crossed the line in last season’s title decider against Manchester City.   

Their 3-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday – thanks in part to Aguero’s continuing Anfield jinx – has put them eight points clear after 12 games. Could this be the season the Premier League’s longest-running hoodoo is broken?
