As much as Aguero has been a picture of consistency in his nine seasons in the Premier League, he will also be remembered for matches when he savagely put helpless opposition to the sword.

Scoring five goals in a Premier League game requires a pitiless streak as well as skill, and Aguero certainly showed that here – not only putting five past Tim Krul in the match but doing so in a 20-minute spell either side of half time.

Newcastle had been doing OK, taking the lead after 18 minutes and going in level at haf-time, but before they’d had the chance to reflect on a solid opening period things took a nasty turn for the worse.

Capitalising on errors and producing moments of brilliance himself, Aguero plundered goal after goal to leave Newcastle shell-shocked and equal a record first set by Andy Cole in 1995.

His only regret might be that he was substituted in the 66^th minute, denying him the opportunity to score the division’s first double hat-trick.

Most consecutive 20-goal seasons (5) – 28 April 2019

Aguero has hardly been blessed when it comes to injuries, having only managed more than 30 Premier League appearances in three of his last seven completed seasons, but that only goes to highlight his consistency.

Of players with over 50 Premier League goals, the Argentine ranks comfortably top in terms of frequency  – he has scored every 107 minutes, with Harry Kane next best on a goal every 120 minutes.

That consistency has allowed Aguero to rack up 20+ goals in five consecutive seasons, a record he shares with Thierry Henry, despite his relatively frequent absences.  Currently on 16 goals for the 2019/20 season, it is a record that he needs four goals in the remaining nine games to make his own.

This record also disputes the idea that Aguero has been out of favour at the Etihad since Pep Guardiola’s appointment in 2016. He hit 62 goals in 89 league appearances between 2016-19, a marginally better rate than the average of his City career.

Highest overseas Premier League goalscorer (180) –12 January 2020

While it’s easy to succumb to recency bias, it can also be the case that current players do not get considered as legends often enough.

Aguero is surely in that bracket after climbing to fourth in the all-time Premier League goalscoring standings, above any other foreign player in the history of the division.

Thierry Henry was widely heralded as the best player on the planet when he was firing Arsenal to two titles between 2002-04, and is generally considered the Premier League’s greatest ever player.

In purely statistical terms, Aguero has more goals at a better rate and has won more titles, so he surely challenges the Frenchman for that crown.

Most Premier League hat-tricks (12) – 12 January 2020

Manchester City’s 6-1 victory at Aston Villa in January saw Aguero kill two birds with one stone, passing Henry’s goals tally and Alan Shearer’s record for most Premier League hat-tricks.

And it’s fitting that this three-goal haul, the 12^th of his Premier League career, was about as vintage Aguero as they come.

The first was a 20-yard shot that flew into the corner, not too dissimilar to one that he scored on his City debut against Swansea in 2012.

The second was an emphatic finish after a slalom between defenders in the penalty area, much like one that he scored at Old Trafford in 2013, and, of course, his title-winner against QPR in 2012.

The third was rifled into the roof of the net – a fine example of the variety of his finishing.

All this hat-trick missed was the trademark nip in front of a centre-half and instinctive finish, but no doubt we’ll see one of those in his next one.

Most Premier League player of the month awards (7) – 7 February 2020

Strangely, this record further emphasises that Aguero’s brilliance has been underplayed.

Though he receives regular acclaim for bursts of form, it doesn’t seem to have translated into the bigger picture often enough.

The 31-year-old has only twice been included in the PFA team of the year, even missing out in 2015, when he had just won the Golden Boot. He has never won the player of the year award, even though Mo Salah, Luis Suarez, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney all have in the last 10 years.

Though those players made compelling cases in each of their campaigns, it seems odd that all Aguero has to show for nine years of immense individual performances is a collection of player of the month awards.
