ARSENAL: Sokratis (12)

Only one Premier League player was booked more often than Sokratis last season, whose cards were evenly spread enough that you can safely back him throughout the season.

Granit Xhaka, who commits fouls and tackles more often than his captain, remains a prime candidate, too.

ASTON VILLA: John McGinn (14)

McGinn ranked second for cards in the Championship last season, and his combative style should ensure he picks up plenty more in the Premier League.

If you ever need another Villa option, new signing Wesley Moraes picked up seven yellows and a red for Aston Villa last season.

BOURNEMOUTH: Jefferson Lerma (12)

Lerma came to the Premier League with a reputation and how he lived up to it. Twelve cards, including four in consecutive matches in December, is a strong haul, and you suspect there are more to come.

Dan Gosling tackled more than his midfield partner last season, and came second in terms of cards with a paltry eight.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION: Dale Stephens (6)

Brighton are a well-behaved bunch. Every other non-Big Six club features a player with more bookings than Stephens, the Seagulls’ naughtiest player.

Mysteriously, though, Glenn Murray committed more fouls than any player in the division.

BURNLEY: Ben Mee/Phil Bardsley (9)

Burnley ranked second for cards for last season, yet none of their players are in the top 13.

Several of their considerable British contingent are worth considering, with all of their top seven most-carded players either English or Scottish.

CHELSEA: Jorginho (8)

Jorginho may not be left as isolated in midfield under Frank Lampard as with Maurizio Sarri, but it is fair to say the defensive side of the game is not his strength.

Cesar Azpilicueta committed more fouls than any current Chelsea player last season, and is also a candidate.

CRYSTAL PALACE: Luka Milivojevic (10)

For a relatively unspectacular player, Milivojevic certainly posts some big numbers; his 12 goals last season were almost matched by his cards tally.

James McArthur only managed seven bookings, but equalled his captain in terms of fouls.

EVERTON: Andre Gomes (7)

Everton were a team with the potential to lose their temper last season. Not least Gomes, who committed the third-most fouls of any Premier League player.

Four others received at least five bookings, including the traditionally card-happy Idrissa Gueye.

LEICESTER CITY: Wilfred Ndidi (8)

Only Gueye tackles more than Ndidi, who could be on for even more than eight cards this coming season.

As could Ricardo Pereira, who was only booked seven times last season but threatened plenty more.

LIVERPOOL: Fabinho (6)

Eight Liverpool players played more minutes than Fabinho, which suggests he can increase his tally of six when he is a first-team regular from the start in the 2019/20 campaign.

Roberto Firmino committed more fouls than any of his team-mates last season, so will surely top his grand total of zero cards next term.

MANCHESTER CITY: Fernandinho (5)

After Vincent Kompany (6) left for Anderlecht, Fernandinho is the new leader of City’s dark arts.

It is notable that three other midfielders – Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva and Bernardo Silva – all finished the season with three, suggesting that they really do take it in turns to foul.

MANCHESTER UNITED: Luke Shaw (11)

Manchester United’s Player of the Season was also their least disciplined, with Shaw never going more than three matches without a card in all competitions.

Watch out for Shaw’s new full-back friend Aaron Wan-Bissaka, too. The £50m man ranked third for tackles in the division last season.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Fabian Schar (12)

Despite playing fewer minutes than anybody else inside the top 30, Schar ranked joint-second for bookings last season.

Matt Ritchie committed more fouls than any Newcastle player, though, and is a strong candidate for cards if he continues to be used as a wing-back.

NORWICH CITY: Christoph Zimmermann (11)

Zimmermann somehow picked up 11 cards despite ranking outside the top 16 for fouls and tackles in the Norwich squad last season.

Emi Buendia, who combines brilliant skill with fieriness in a typically South American style, looks a much better bet for a regular Norwich booking.

SHEFFIELD UNITED: Chris Basham/Oliver Norwood (11)

Norwood does just about everything for Sheffield United: set-pieces, shots, tackles, and cards.

The step up in division means Enda Stevens, who completed more tackles than any of his team-mates, could improve on last season’s tally of eight bookings.

SOUTHAMPTON: Oriol Romeu (11)

Romeu won out with four cards in four matches at the end of the season, but guessing who will start in Southampton’s midfield is the key to correctly calling who will be booked the most this campaign.

Romeu, Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are the Saints’ most proficient tacklers and foulers, but only started three times together last season.

TOTTENHAM: Danny Rose/Harry Kane (5)

Spurs tend to share the cards around, so it would be understandable if you didn’t have much faith in backing Rose or Kane each week.

Tanguy Ndombele had a reasonable disciplinary record for Lyon last season, too, while Juan Foyth – who topped the Spurs tackles charts last season – doesn’t play many minutes.

WATFORD: Etienne Capoue (14)

Watford have only been back in the division for four seasons, but Capoue became their second player to equal the all-time Premier League cards record.

Jose Holebas, who did it first in 2016/17, also picked up 12 bookings last season for the least-disciplined team in the league.

WEST HAM: Robert Snodgrass (10)

Snodgrass is one of few attacking players to feature on this list, but a run of six cards in nine matches in the Autumn ensured he comfortably beat Mark Noble and Ryan Fredericks.

The latter pair are better bets this season, though. Particularly Fredericks, whose card per minute was ratio was as good as Snodgrass’.
