Here are our selections for this weekend's matches...

Arsenal v Leicester - Friday (Sky Sports Premier League, 19.45)

media

Arsenal to win –

Leicester should offer some resistance, particularly with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil set to miss out with injury, so avoid backing a big winning margin.

Arsenal should still scrape through, though.

Under 2.5 goals –

With the two big guns out, and considering Leicester’s improved defensive record under Craig Shakespeare last season, this is unlikely to be a rout.

First Arsenal goalscorer: Danny Welbeck –

This is something of a punt, but Welbeck is likely start in the absence of Ozil and Sanchez.

With all eyes on Lacazette, the 26-year-old has crept under the radar.

Watford v Liverpool - Saturday (Sky Sports Premier League, 12.30)

media

Over 2.5 goals –

Goals are likely to follow Liverpool wherever they go this season.

Their new attack is formidable, while Watford’s array of big, powerful strikers are exactly the sort Jurgen Klopp’s side struggle to deal with.

Jose Holebas to be booked

Holebas had the worst disciplinary record in the Premier League last season, not helped by his abiding stroppy outlook.

Against excellent wingers, he should have no problem getting off to a positive start in the yellow-card stakes this time around.

First Liverpool goalscorer: Sadio Mane –

Considering Holebas and Daryl Janmaat are primarily attacking full-backs, both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane should have plenty of joy.

The latter, cutting in from the left, seems a likely first scorer.

Brighton v Manchester City - Saturday (BT Sport 1, 17.30)

media

Manchester City (-2) –

Manchester City may suffer the odd calamity in defence, but they are without doubt the most destructive Premier League team going forward.

The visitors’ ominous pre-season form means Brighton must surely fear being on the end of an onslaught.

City to score 1 or 2 first half goals –

City had scored at least twice by half-time in the last four games of last season, and they should have no problem repeating the trick.

Brighton’s defensive resilience should stop the damage creeping beyond two goals inside the first 45 minutes, though.

Sergio Aguero to score 2 or more

If City cut loose, so will Aguero.

However Pep Guardiola views the Argentine, he can hardly deny his lethal goalscoring record. Back him to start this season well.

Newcastle v Tottenham - Sunday (Sky Sports Premier League, 13.30)

media

Tottenham to win to nil –

Tottenham may have been thrown off course by Danny Rose’s midweek comments, but they have impressed in pre-season and ended last season magnificently.

Newcastle are light in attack, meaning this is likely to be a bit of a mismatch.

Tottenham to score over 1.5 goals -

When Spurs get on top of opposition, they are relentless.

Back them to rack up the goals tally as they dominate the game at St James’.

First Tottenham goalscorer: Harry Kane –

Kane – as revealed amid the Rose furore – may earn less than Jermain Defoe and several other middling Premier League strikers, but you can be sure Tottenham wouldn’t swap him for anyone.

Back him to get his Golden Boot defence off to a good start here.

Manchester United v West Ham - Sunday (Sky Sports Premier League, 16.00)

media

Over 2.5 goals –

A combination of Romelu Lukaku’s good record against West Ham, and the fact that visitors have scored on five of their last six visits to Old Trafford, should ensure goals in this one.

Ander Herrera to be booked

Protected by Nemanja Matic, Herrera should be freed to fiercely press opposition higher up the pitch.

That should prove beneficial to Manchester United, but is likely to result in the midfielder picking up even more bookings, too.

First Manchester United goalscorer: Romelu Lukaku –

Before a 0-0 draw with Everton in April, Lukaku had scored in nine consecutive appearances against West Ham.

After a goal against Real Madrid on Tuesday, back the Belgian to open the scoring for his new side in this game.
