The opening Premier League weekend of the new season will be rounded off on Monday night when Manchester United welcome Wolves to Old Trafford.

United are beginning their second season under manager Erik ten Hag and will be hoping to build on their third-place finish from last term after bringing in Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund.

Things are looking pretty settled at Old Trafford, but the same cannot be said for Wolves, who saw head coach Julen Lopetegui depart just days before the start of the new season, with Gary O'Neil coming in as his replacement.

With key players having also left over the summer and a lack of new arrivals, it could be a long hard season for Wolves, starting with a tough evening at Old Trafford on Monday.

Routine win expected for hosts

United built much of their success last season on a strong home record, as they won 15 and lost just one of their 19 league matches at Old Trafford during 2022-23. Only champions Manchester City picked up more points on home soil.

Ten Hag's side also conceded the fewest home goals last term, letting in just 10, and they will expect to open the new season with a home win and a clean sheet against notoriously goal-shy Wolves.

Wolves were the lowest scorers in the Premier League last season, netting just 31 from their 38 games, while they have allowed forwards Raul Jimenez and Diego Costa to depart over the summer.

The Molineux outfit lost both home and away to United last season without scoring and that trend can continue on Monday, especially when you consider under 2.5 goals have been scored in nine of the last 10 meetings between the two sides.

Fernandes to celebrate captaincy with a goal

Bruno Fernandes was confirmed as United's new captain over the summer and he will hope to mark his first competitive match as permanent skipper with a goal.

The Portugal international certainly has a proven track record when it comes to scoring goals on the opening weekend of the season - he hit a hat-trick in United's 5-1 victory over Leeds at the start of the 2021-22 campaign - while he also ended last term by scoring in the Red Devils' final three matches, including the FA Cup final defeat to Man City.

Fernandes was also on the scoresheet for Portugal over the summer and his chances of finding the back of the net on Monday should be boosted as he is United's regular penalty-taker.

While there are no guarantees United will be awarded a penalty during Monday’s match, their likely dominance of proceedings could result in Fernandes being presented with an opportunity from 12 yards.
