Ederson to Manchester City

Pep Guardiola knows what he wants this summer, and he’s going to spend whatever it takes to get it.

And that’s fine.

Manchester City have got more money than anyone else in the Premier League, and Ederson is the player that Guardiola has identified as his ideal goalkeeper.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, City did spend £14m on another South American who was good with his feet a year ago, and he turned out to be the worst goalkeeper in the top flight.

After the Claudio Bravo debacle, it’s hard to trust Pep’s judgement on goalkeepers at this point.

Henry Onyekeru to Arsenal

media

Rejoice, Arsenal fans.

Yes, Arsene Wenger is staying. Yes, you’ll be in the Europa League next season.

But at least the Gunners have finally found the new Henry.

Wenger’s latest plunge into the bargain bucket suggests that all this talk of change at the Emirates this summer was just PR in the face of fan protests.

Who would have thought that the Frenchman – new contract in hand – would consider a 19-year-old from the Belgian second tier as the answer to his centre-forward problem?

Pretty much everyone, it turns out.

Same old Arsene, same old Arsenal.

Antoine Griezmann to Manchester United

media

Their club may have just finished sixth, but Manchester United fans are still the smuggest bunch in the Premier League.

And so they proved when it emerged on Tuesday that Griezmann might – yes, might – be moving to Old Trafford this summer.

Sure, the Atletico striker has also been strongly linked with Bayern Munich, who have reached at least the semi-finals of the Champions League in five of the last six years.

But why would he choose them over a team who spent £150m last summer and only made it into the Europe’s top competition through the back door?

Calm down, United supporters. Your side probably will end up with Griezmann.

But let’s at least wait until the start of the season before announcing a return to the Fergie years.

Ivan Perisic to Manchester United

media

United supporters are getting excited about Griezmann, but they aren’t quite as enthralled about watching Ivan Perisic next season.

The reaction to the news that Jose Mourinho wants to sign the Croatian has been one of disbelief, despair and disgust.

It’s not hard to see why.

Perisic is 28 years old and has only scored double-digit league goals in one season – hardly the sign of a £35m winger.

At least he’s tall and tracks back, though, which should make him a favourite of Mourinho’s, if no one else.

Riyad Mahrez to leave Leicester

media

Someone’s finally told Mahrez that Leicester might not be the best place for his career to progress.

The problem is, it’s a year too late.

Every single team in the Premier League would have wanted to sign him last summer.

But he stayed, and while N’Golo Kante was off in west London winning another league title, the Algerian was stuck in the East Midlands with Jamie Vardy and Claudio Ranieri, whose cheery disposition dissipated as the season went on.

After the forgettable year he’s had, it’s hard to see him getting a move to any side in the top six.
