PORTUGAL v SPAIN

David Silva

With the identity of their No. 1 striker not yet clear, Silva stands out as the best bet to open the scoring from Spain’s array of midfield goal threats.

The Manchester City midfielder comes into this tournament having just completed the second-most prolific season of his club career, with four of his 10 goals for the Premier League champions breaking the deadlock.

Ex-manager Julen Lopetegui had also reportedly handed Silva penalty-taking duties. Assuming he is retained by Fernando Hierro in that department, he certainly has the edge.

FRANCE v AUSTRALIA

Antoine Griezmann

Griezmann continued his consistent goalscoring form by notching in France’s friendly victory over Italy at the start of June, and is a solid selection to open their account in Russia.

The 27-year-old came to life at Euro 2016 two years ago, scoring six goals as Les Bleus progressed to the final, three of which were his side’s first in a match.

With Didier Deschamps yet to settle on a definite system, he is the only certain starter in France’s attack against Australia, so has to be picked.

ARGENTINA v ICELAND

Lionel Messi

One own goal aside, Messi scored all of Argentina’s first four at the 2014 World Cup.

The 30-year-old netted also seven times in qualification, with none of his team-mates contributing more than two.

That haul included a pivotal hat-trick against Ecuador in October to get his team to Russia, which he followed up with another three against Haiti in his side’s only warm-up match.

Get funky with Angel di Maria or Sergio Aguero – or even an Icelandic forward – if you wish, but the odds are stacked in Messi’s favour.

CROATIA v NIGERIA

Andrej Kramaric

Kramaric should start against Nigeria after netting the winner for Croatia in their 2-1 win over Senegal last Friday.

Whether played through the middle or from one side, the Hoffenheim forward is one of Zlatko Dalic’s key goal threats after scoring in four of his last seven internationals.

The Croats are packed with excellent playmakers, but Kramaric is the likeliest to take advantage of the chances created.
