1 Harry Kane

There’s nobody in the tournament you’d rather have. Has scored twice, brilliantly, first up for England in shoot-outs.

2 Marcus Rashford

Has scored 15 of 17 career penalties, and dispatched his effort nicely in the 2018 shoot-out against Colombia.

Looks a different player to the one that missed in the Euro 2020 final.

3 Callum Wilson

The chances of him being on the same pitch as Kane are slim, unless Southgate introduces him in the last minute of extra time.

However, a return of seven from seven since signing for Newcastle means he can be relied upon.

4 Kieran Trippier

A career record of two misses from two can be ignored considering he netted a pressure penalty in the 2018 last-16 shoot-out.

One of England’s set-piece specialists evidently has the composure and technique to do the same in Qatar.

5 Bukayo Saka

Since missing the decisive penalty at Euro 2020, Saka has scored spot-kicks against Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.

It feels only right that we give him the chance to atone for that miss at Wembley – and we reckon he’d take it, too.

6 Harry Maguire

We haven’t forgotten how he took a TV camera out in scoring an incredible penalty in the 2020 final.

Netted in similarly emphatic fashion in the 2019 Nations League and 2021 Europa League final.

7 James Maddison

Unlikely to find himself on the pitch, but has the confidence and skill to score – proven by a career record of five from six.

8 Trent Alexander-Arnold

Never taken a senior penalty, but a 100 per cent hit rate from four England under-19 spot-kicks suggests what we suspected: that he’d be very useful from 12 yards.

9 Jude Bellingham

It’s Jude Bellingham’s world and we’re all just living in it.

10 Phil Foden

Surprisingly doesn’t go near too many set-pieces, but he’s bound to be good, isn’t he?

11 Mason Mount

Hits the ball nicely – but has a history of missing in shoot-outs, so he’s down the pecking order.

12 Declan Rice

A very confident player. You just know, even if he missed one earlier this season, that he’s up for it.

13 Jordan Pickford

One from one for England, scoring against Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League third-place play-off, and is supposedly excellent at them.

Would definitely hit it harder than any of his team-mates.

14 Eric Dier

He scored the winner in the 2018 shoot-out win, but it wasn’t the best.

15 Jack Grealish

For whatever reason, it just doesn’t feel right.

16 Luke Shaw

It wouldn’t feel like game over if Shaw ended up taking a penalty, but it would probably have to be a sudden-death situation.

17 Raheem Sterling

Took eight penalties for Man City but only scored four of them, and just isn’t a composed finisher.

18 John Stones

Another one you wouldn’t be surprised to see score with ease, but we have no evidence for him being anything other than one of the last picks.

19 Connor Gallagher

Scored five penalties from five in under-18 football, so is clearly perfectly good from 12 yards.

Surely, though, you’re not sticking him anywhere near the top on his major tournament debut.

20 Kalvin Phillips

Was kept on the pitch to potentially take a penalty at Wembley last year, but was presumably nowhere near the top five.

Hasn’t taken one in his career and we’d all be quite relieved if he’s not called upon in the next few weeks.

21 Conor Coady

Extremely unlikely to see the light of day at this competition, and – despite having a decent ping on him – is surely not a natural from the spot.

22 Jordan Henderson

That he was subbed as a sub so that Rashford could get on the pitch to take a penalty in the Euros final says it all.

A big fall from grace since taking the third spot-kick in 2018 (and missing in a pre-tournament friendly last summer).

23 Aaron Ramsdale

Why would he be good at them?

24 Kyle Walker

The most obvious defender’s defender in this squad. Rarely ventures over the halfway line in normal play and shouldn’t be asked to if he’s on the field for a shoot-out either.

25 Nick Pope

It’s difficult to imagine a more awkward penalty-taker than a goalkeeper who’s not regarded as being much good with his feet.
