Peru to beat Australia –

Peru’s early elimination does not reflect their impressive performances so far.

Ricardo Gareca’s side rank 10th for shots and 12th for passes completed in this competition, suggesting that only a combination of profligacy in front of goal and solid opposition defences have denied them plenty more success.

Given that Australia – who are also yet to win – have conceded in 14 of their last 17 matches, the South Americans should still leave Russia with something to show for their first World Cup appearance.

France to beat Denmark –

Denmark are, perhaps, fortunate to be on four points after uninspiring performances against Peru and Australia.

Age Hereide’s side have scored just five goals in their last six matches, and rank 24th of the 32 teams for shots on goal in this competition.

France will make some changes, but Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud are still set to start together upfront.

Their partnership proved the basis of Les Bleus’ win against Peru, and should be enough to leave a pedestrian Danish side sweating on other results.

Croatia to win or draw v Iceland –

Croatia’s 3-0 win over Argentina was probably the standout result of the group stage so far, and ensured they only need a point from this game to guarantee top spot in Group D.

But, with manager Zlatko Dalic making clear his intention to rest players, it’s worth playing safe by including the possibility of them settling for a draw.

Iceland have regularly frustrated top opposition in the last two years, not least in their 1-1 draw with Argentina last week.

They are, though, without a win in eight matches.

Argentina to beat Nigeria –

Reports that Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano will take charge of Argentina for this game at least suggest that the players are sticking together a chaotic start to the tournament.

And, despite the pressure clearly affecting Messi, it would be dangerous to back against him dragging his side through this win-or-bust match, after he scored a hat-trick in similar circumstances to get his side to Russia against Ecuador in October.

Nigeria made big improvements against Iceland last week, but it is worth remembering how they struggled when facing superior opposition in Croatia in the first match.
