First-round leader golf tips for the Irish Open
Back any player to win the Irish Open and Betway will pay you out as a winner if they lead at the end of the first round.
TOMMY FLEETWOOD
To win
To lead after the first round
Fleetwood has regularly started well this season and currently ranks sixth in first-round scoring average on the PGA Tour.
He opened with a 66 in his last start at the Travelers Championship to end the day T13, and a he was also third on Thursday at the PGA Championship in May after shooting 67.
Fleetwood has good links pedigree, having won the 2017 Open de France and finished T2 in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in both 2014 and 2018.
Despite often getting into contention, though, he’s only won once in the past 18 months, so a first-round leader bet could be a better option than backing him to triumph at Lahinch.
LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN
To win
To lead after the first round
Oosthuizen comes into the Irish Open in decent form, having finished T36 in his last start at the Travelers Championship and T7 at the US Open prior to that.
He opened with a 66 at Pebble Beach, which left him joint-second on the leaderboard at the end of the first round.
Oosthuizen has now made eight consecutive cuts, so there’s little chance of him struggling early on in Ireland this week, particularly given that he’s an excellent links player.
He’s only won once since 2016 so a victory here might be just beyond him, but he’s certainly worth backing to get off to a good start.
OLIVER WILSON
To win
To lead after the first round
Wilson looks a cracking bet to take the early lead at a big price this week.
The Englishman led the Alfred Dunhill Links after round one in 2013 and 2014, shooting 64 in both, and he went on to win on the latter occasion.
He was T2 after round one in the BMW International Open a fortnight ago, and was inside the top 10 at the end of Thursday’s play at March’s Qatar Masters before going on to finish T2.
While he’s missed the cut in his last two starts at this event in 2015 and 2016, Wilson had made it through to the weekend in his previous four Irish Open appearances and should return to that form at Lahinch.
