Jon Rahm

To lead after round one –

Rahm comes into his third US Open in fine form, having placed inside the top five in three of his last four starts, including a win at the Open de España in April.

The Spaniard is a really fast starter, ranking second in first-round scoring on the PGA Tour this year with an average of 68.5 over a total of 10 rounds.

Rahm’s 64 on Saturday at this year’s Masters showed that he can go low at difficult courses, and Shinnecock Hills’ links style should suit him and the rest of the European players.

Marc Leishman

To win –

To lead after round one –

Major specialist Leishman shot 68 in the first round at last year’s US Open to tie for seventh heading into Friday.

The 34-year-old Australian placed second at the Byron Nelson in his penultimate start before the US Open, opening with a round of 61 to go three shots clear on the first day.

Leishman’s a fantastic player in the wind whose game is perfectly suited to Shinnecock Hills, and his second-place finish at the 2015 Open shows how well he can play on links courses.

Steve Stricker

To win –

To lead after round one –

Stricker opened with a four-under-par 66 at the St Jude Classic last week to finish joint-second after the first round.

The American now ranks first in first-round scoring on the PGA Tour in 2018, placing inside the top seven at the end of day one in each of his last three starts.

Having made the cut in his last 10 starts at the US Open and finished inside the top 25 in his last five, Stricker can be relied upon to start well again this year and is available at a huge price.
