Back to win: Dustin Johnson 10/1
Johnson is almost too short at 10/1 this week, but he’s got to be backed given his record at the WGC – Mexico.
He has won this event on two occasions, including in 2017 when it was played at Chapultepec for the first time, and he’s finished inside the top seven on three other occasions.
Johnson has made a fine start to the season, with three top-10s in his five 2019 starts to date, including a win at the Saudi International three weeks ago.
Short game is so important at this course, which suits the American, who ranks fifth in shots gained around the green on the PGA Tour this year.
Each-way shout: Bubba Watson 33/1
I tipped Bubba Watson to defend his title at the Genesis Open last week, but he could only muster a T15.
Nevertheless, we’re diving back in at another of the two-time Masters champion’s favourite events.
Watson has finished inside the top three on four separate occasions at the WGC - Mexico, and earned a T9 at Chapultepec last year.
He perfectly fits the profile of a winner of this event, and is well worth an each-way bet at 33/1.
Outside shot: Tyrrell Hatton 50/1
Hatton has made two appearances at the WGC – Mexico, finishing 10th on debut in 2017 and T3 last year.
The Englishman’s excellent short game – he ranks first around the green this season – means he’s an ideal fit at this course.
Hatton missed the cut at the Genesis Open last weekend, but that extra rest could be a bonus after so many of the players at the top of the betting went deep into the weekend at Riviera.
The 27-year-old proved he can contend in competitive fields with four top-10 finishes at majors and, while a win might be beyond him this week, it’s not hard to see him being high up the leaderboard on Sunday.
