Back to win: Jon Rahm

Rahm comes into Portrush on the back of a second victory at the Irish Open a fortnight ago, and his form means he has to be backed to win his first major this week.

The Spaniard has now earned three successive top-three finishes, having picked up a T3 at the US Open and a T2 at the Andalucia Masters.

Rahm’s fiery temperament is going to be questioned until he earns a signature victory, but he’s finished inside the top 10 in four of his last seven major starts and it’s surely only a matter of time until he breaks his duck.

With two wins already this year and another nine top-10 finishes, he’s a good a bet as anyone to lift the Claret Jug.

Each-way shout: Henrik Stenson

Stenson beat Phil Mickelson in an iconic Sunday duel at Troon to win the Open in 2016, and the Swede has found form just in time for this week.

He finished T4 at the Scottish Open last week, shooting 66 or better in three of the four rounds. A double-bogey on the 17th hole on Saturday was, incredibly, the only time he dropped a shot all week.

Stenson now has three top-10 finishes in his last three starts, having also picked up a T9 in the US Open at Pebble Beach last month.

The 43-year-old’s superb iron play and accuracy off the tee means he’ll always be better suited to the Open than any other major, and his stats this year – he ranks first in approach play and fifth in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour – suggest he’s in the kind of form to contend once again.

Outside shot: Rafael Cabrera-Bello

Cabrera-Bello has only won three times on the European Tour, and his lack of a ruthless streak in contention means he’s always a risky bet in the big tournaments.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard’s phenomenal links record means he’s worth an each-way bet this week, particularly with eight places on offer.

Cabrera-Bello has made the cut in six of his seven appearances at the Open, including a T4 in 2017, and he finished second when the Irish Open was played at Portrush in 2012.

The Spaniard won the Scottish Open in 2017, and comes into this week on the back of three successive top 10s at the BMW International Open, Irish Open and Scottish Open.
