The Money List: Golf tips for the Open de France
Jack Green's golf tips for this week's European Tour event at Le Golf National include a player to win, an each-way shout and an outside shot.
Back to win: Matthias Schwab
Schwab is yet to claim his first European Tour win, but this week looks a great opportunity in a relatively weak field in France.
The 24-year-old comes into this event in cracking form, with four top-10 finishes in his last six starts. He finished T4 last week and has now shot 70 or better in nine successive rounds.
Schwab has only played in this event once, finishing T37 last year, but should comfortably better that result now that he’s among the most consistent players on the European Tour.
He ranks inside the top 15 in total shots gained, greens in regulation percentage and scrambling this season, so it’s surely only a matter of time until he gets his first victory.
Each-way shout: Matthew Southgate
It was clear to anyone who watched Europe beat the USA in last year’s Ryder Cup that accuracy is much more important than distance at Le Golf National, which bodes well for Southgate.
The Englishman ranks fifth in driving accuracy on the European Tour this season and fourth in GIR percentage.
It’s no surprise, then, that he’s had some success at the Open de France in the past, having finished T5 last year and T11 in 2016.
The 31-year-old missed the cut in Italy last week but finished second at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in his previous start.
Outside shot: Jamie Donaldson
If you’re looking for a player at a bigger price to take advantage of our first-round leader offer this week, then Donaldson looks a great option.
The Welshman finished inside the top six at this event in both 2013 and 2014, and is capable of returning to that form this week.
Donaldson looks an ideal fit for this course as he ranks 32nd in driving accuracy, 26th in GIR percentage and first in shots gained around the green on this season’s European Tour.
He missed the cut last week and hasn’t been in great form, but did finish inside the top 25 at the Open de España a fortnight ago and has earned two top 10s this season.
