Henrik Stenson

Stenson is in great form as he heads to Scotland – the scene of the greatest triumph of his career to date.

The 2016 Open champion has only won once since he beat Phil Mickelson in that Sunday duel at Royal Troon, but back-to-back top 10s at the Canadian Open and US Open suggest that he’s playing well enough to get into contention here.

Stenson has a great record in this competition, having made the cut in each of his last seven appearances, including a T3 in 2013 and a T8 in 2012.

The Swede ranks first in shots gained on approach to the green and fifth in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour this season, which should prove important given that avoiding the rough tends to be key in links events.

EACH-WAY SHOUTS

Tyrrell Hatton

I’m going for a couple of each-way bets this week in what is a great field.

Hatton disappointed by missing the cut in Ireland last time out, but I’m willing to stick with him here given his fantastic links record.

The 27-year-old has twice won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, has a top-five finish at the Open to his name and five top-fives in his last eight links starts in Scotland.

The weather could cause huge problems at Renaissance this week, so it’s sensible to side with a player who has consistently proven their ability to play well in these conditions.

Hatton has had a middling season so far while playing almost exclusively in America, but his links pedigree can’t be questioned and it would be no surprise if he’s near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

Martin Kaymer

Kaymer has bounced back from a couple of tough years by putting together a nice run of form this season.

The German did well to finish T9 at last week’s Irish Open, and has now finished T16 or better in three of his last four starts, a run that also includes a third-place finish at the Memorial Tournament.

Kaymer won the Scottish Open back in 2009 and has also triumphed at both the Open de France and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in the past.

A good result this week would earn the 34-year-old a spot at next week’s Open – a goal he says he’s been focusing on for the past month – and his recent form suggests that he’s capable of booking his place at Portrush.
