Back to win: Jordan Spieth

Spieth never got close to being in contention at the US Open, where his week was overshadowed by debate about whether he crossed the line in discussions with his caddy.

That controversy was overblown, though, and in truth the world No. 29 didn’t really have a chance at Pebble Beach, which is far more suited to the big hitters.

TPC River Highlands is a much shorter course and one that Spieth clearly enjoys, given that he won here in 2017.

The greens here are large and easy to hit, which bodes well for Spieth, who has been really poor from tee to green this year but ranks seventh in shots gained from putting on the PGA Tour.

A T3-T8-T7 run prior to the US Open suggests he’s ready to win again and this looks a good opportunity to do so.

Each-way shout: Bubba Watson

There’s a simple rule with Watson: back him at his favourite courses.

His 12 career wins have come at just seven different venues, with three of those victories coming at TPC River Highlands.

Watson came from behind with a final round of 63 to win the Travelers for a third time last year, and he’s now finished inside the top five in four of his last seven starts at this event.

The 40-year-old isn’t in great form, having missed the cut at Pebble Beach last week, but his unique game means he’s always got a chance at certain tracks. This is definitely one of those.

Outside shot: Charley Hoffman

Hoffman has made the cut in eight successive appearances at the Travelers Championship, a run that includes four top-15 finishes.

The American finished second in 2013 after leading with just two holes to play, and also earned a T3 in 2017 with an impressive 66 on the last day.

Hoffman made a shocking start to the year but has begun to turn his form around. He made six successive cuts between March and May, and his MC at the Memorial Tournament in his last start can be overlooked as he’s never really played well at that event.

A runner-up finish at the Texas Open in April showed that Hoffman’s still capable of getting into contention, and he’s worth a flier this week given his history at this venue.
