Back to win: Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s horror start was the early story of the Open last week, but the Northern Irishman showed real heart and grit to fight back and almost make the cut at Portrush, which is encouraging ahead of this week.

McIlroy clearly struggled with the weight of expectation in his home country, but the pressure is now off and he has a phenomenal record at the WGC Invitational, having won it in 2014 and finished inside the top 10 in six of his last seven attempts.

This is the first year that the event has been played at TPC Southwind, a course that McIlroy has played at twice in his career, finishing T29 back in 2010 and T7 in 2012.

The 30-year-old might struggle to bounce back from last week’s disappointment, but it’s worth remembering that he has had a fantastic season so far, with two wins and nine other top-10s.

With the missed cut affording him an extra couple of days to rest and put Portrush behind him, it’s worth backing McIlroy to get back on track in Tennessee.

Each-way shout: Chez Reavie

Reavie has missed back-to-back cuts at the Open and the Rocket Mortgage Classic, meaning he’s available at a decent price this week even though he won the Travelers Championship just a month ago.

That victory followed a T3 at the US Open, as well as a top-15 finish at the PGA Championship in May.

The American has a great record at Southwind, having finished T6 at last year’s St Jude Classic, T4 in 2017 and T12 in 2015.

Reavie has just two PGA Tour wins to his name and has never performed particularly well at WGC events, but his win last month was very impressive and he’s a good bet at a venue he clearly enjoys.

Outside shot: Matt Wallace

Wallace has gone T51-T14-T55 in his last three starts, but has a great chance to get back on track now that the European Tour’s links swing is over.

The Englishman had three top-three finishes in his last five starts before the Irish Open, along with a T12 at the US Open last month.

Wallace missed the cut at the Irish Open, Scottish Open and Open Championship last year and went on to win in Denmark just three starts later, so there’s a decent chance he bounces back quickly again here and finishes high up the leaderboard at TPC Southwind.

He’s never played at this venue before, but he has a good record on the PGA Tour this year, finishing inside the top 20 in four of his seven starts in America.
