Here are Jack Green's football tips for the second major of the season.

First time major winner

Seven players in the last 10 years have won their first major at the PGA Championship, and there’s a good chance of another first-time champion this week.

Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau are all near the top of the betting at Bethpage Black, and they all look to be in with a good chance.

Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka all to finish in the top 20

McIlroy, Johnson and Koepka have all been remarkably consistent this season, and they look perfectly suited to this week’s extremely long venue.

It’s not hard to see the three bombers dominating at Bethpage Black, particularly with the wet conditions also playing into their favour.

This bet could come down to Woods, then, and the Masters champion should be primed to contend after taking a few weeks off since his triumph at Augusta.

Woods finished second in this event last year and has now placed inside the top six in each of the last three majors.

Hideki Matsuyama top Japanese, Sungjae Im top Korean and Jon Rahm top Spaniard

Matsuyama is the clear favourite to be his nation’s highest finisher, and Rahm looks an easy choice to be the top Spaniard given that Sergio Garcia has missed the cut in six consecutive majors.

Im has only made two major championship appearances in his career, but the 21-year-old has been hugely impressive in his first full PGA Tour season, with three finishes inside the top seven so far.

It should only be a matter of time before he is contending in majors, and he looks a better bet this week than fellow Koreans Byeong Hun An, Si Woo Kim and Sung Kang.

Wire-to-wire winner (no ties)

Jimmy Walker was the last player to win wire-to-wire at the PGA Championship, having converted after leading on Thursday in 2016.

It’s worth backing another wire-to-wire winner this week given that Bethpage Black is a course that favours the early leaders.

Tiger Woods led from the first day when he won the 2002 US Open at this venue, while Patrick Reed was inside the top two at the end of each day in his triumph at the 2016 Barclays.

Dustin Johnson bogey-free first round

Bethpage Black is an exceptionally difficult course, so this is a long shot.

The wet weather should make this slightly less tricky this week, though, and few players are as equipped as Johnson to play mistake-free golf here.

The world No. 1 leads all players on the PGA Tour in bogey avoidance this year.
