Back to win: Rickie Fowler

Fowler ended a two-year winless run by triumphing at this event last year, and the 31-year-old looks a good bet to win again this week.

He missed the cut at Torrey Pines last week, but Fowler had finished inside the top 10 in his previous two starts in 2020, including a T5 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the start of January.

The American has now finished 19th or better in five of his last starts dating back to August of last year.

That form bodes well for his chances as he heads to one of his favourite events. He’s finished inside the top four in three of his last four starts at TPC Scottsdale and also finished second back in 2010.

Each-way shout: Gary Woodland

Woodland also missed the cut at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, but he had finished T7 or better in his previous four PGA Tour starts.

The 35-year-old won this event un 2018 and followed that with a T7 last year.

Woodland is coming off the best year of his career, having won the 2019 US Open and proved he can triumph in even the biggest events.

With Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka among the high-profile players missing this event to play in Saudi Arabia, Woodland can take advantage of the slightly weakened field and get into contention once again.

Outside shot: Corey Conners

Conners has never participated in this event before, but he could be a surprise contender on debut as TPC Scottsdale suits his game perfectly.

The Canadian ranked first in greens in regulation percentage on the PGA Tour last year and is joint-11th in 2020, which is a huge plus at this ball-striker’s track where hitting the greens is hugely important.

Conners comes into this event in good form, having finished T19 and T12 in his two starts this year. He’s now finished inside the top 20 in six successive starts.

Given how well the 28-year-old has played over the past few months, he’s well worth backing at a big price.
