Back to win: Tony Finau

After years of being one of golf’s biggest nearly men, Finau has finally become a proven winner, and has a real shot at claiming his first major title this week.

The 33-year-old took over five years to build upon his first PGA Tour win at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, but has since won five times in 22 months.

Finau’s signature win came in a playoff against Cameron Smith at the 2021 Northern Trust, and he again showed the mettle to triumph in strong fields by holding off Jon Rahm at the Mexico Open just three weeks ago.

The American’s talent and consistency have never been in doubt, and he arrives at Oak Hill in top form. With 10 career top-10 major finishes to date, Finau’s been in the mix at these events on several occasions, and now looks to have the mentality to come through and win.

Each-way shout: Matt Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick broke his major duck at last year’s US Open, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to triumph at Brookline.

The Englishman also beat Jordan Spieth in a playoff at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina last month – his second win in the US in 10 months after having never won there previously.

Fitzpatrick has developed into one of the most consistent, steely players on the PGA Tour, and has proven he can get the job done when in contention, with nine career wins to date.

His last five major finishes read 14-5-1-21-10, and he comes into this event on a run of three top 20s in his last four starts, including that RBC Heritage.

Outside shot: Justin Rose

Rose recently broke a four-year winless run with a three-stroke victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, and the 2013 US Open champion is in strong form coming into Oak Hill.

He’s made four straight cuts with three finishes of T25 or better, including a T6 at the Players Championship and a T16 at the Masters.

Rose has come out of a difficult run looking like his old self, and he’s often performed well at the PGA Championship. He’s got five career top 10s at this event and has placed inside the top 30 in eight of the last nine years, including finishes of 9-T8-T13 in the last three.

The former world No. 1 was in contention at Oak Hill back in 2013 before a third round of 77 saw him eventually finish T33, and his recent form suggests he’s capable of getting in the mix again at a big price.
