This will be the 151st edition of the Open, and the 13th time it has been held at Royal Liverpool.

What is the history of the Open?

The Open Championship, also known as just 'The Open' or the 'British Open', has a storied history. It is the world’s oldest golf tournament, and arguably its most prestigious.

The Open was founded in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, and was held there every year up until 1872, after which the venue was rotated between various British golf courses.

The Open is one of men’s golf’s four major tournaments, along with the Masters, the US Open and the PGA Championship.

Who won the first Open Championship?

The first ever Open Championship was held at Prestwick in 1860, and was won by Willie Park Sr by two shots over Old Tom Morris. It was contested over three rounds, and the course featured just 12 holes.

Who are some of the past winners of the Open?

The Open Championship has been won by many of the best players in the history of golf.

The record holder for the most wins is Harry Vardon from Jersey, who won the Open six times between 1896 and 1914.

Four players have won the Open five times – James Braid, John Henry Taylor, Peter Thomson and Tom Watson.

Four-time winners include Tom Morris Sr and Tom Morris Jr, Willie Park Sr, Walter Hagen and Bobby Locke.

In more recent years, the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods have all won the Open three times. Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus are also among the three-time winners of the event.

The last five Open champions were Jordan Spieth (2017), Francesco Molinari (2018), Shane Lowry (2019), Collin Morikawa (2021) and Cameron Smith (2022). There was no 2020 tournament.

Rory McIlroy – the 2014 champion – is the favourite in the Open Championship betting to triumph again in 2023.

What is the Claret Jug?

The Claret Jug is the trophy awarded to the winner of the Open Championship.

It was first awarded 1873 when Tom Kidd won the Open at St Andrews.

The Open champion is allowed to keep the official Claret Jug for a year and then must return it before the next Open Championship. They are then awarded a replica, which they can keep. The winner’s name is engraved on the Claret Jug every year before they are presented the trophy.

What is the prize money for the Open golf championship?

The purse for the 2023 Open Championship is yet to be announced, but the winner is sure to take home a considerable prize.

The total purse for the 2022 Open was just under £12m, which was an increase of 22 per cent from 2021.

Cameron Smith took home £2.1m for winning the event, while runner-up Cameron Young earned £1.2m and Rory McIlroy earned £773,000 for finishing third.

The top 70 players make the cut at the Open, and the lowest finisher of those took home £26,000 in 2022. The top 10 players who missed the cut earned just under £9,000 each, the next 20 took home £7,000 and the remaining players earned just below £6,000.

The majority of players are awarded exemptions to play in the Open as a result of their performance in previous Open Championships, other majors, the PGA and European Tours, or due to their high official world ranking.

Five amateurs are also awarded qualifying exemptions for winning major amateur events.

There are 12 Open Qualifying Series events held around the world, through which players can earn places in the Open field by finishing high up the leaderboard.

Male golfers are eligible to enter local qualifying for the Open if they have a handicap of scratch or better, or have been in the top 2,000 in the official amateur world rankings within the calendar year. Female golfers can also enter local qualifying if they have finished in the top five in any of that year’s women’s majors.

After local qualifying is Final Qualifying, which is comprised of four 36-hole, one-day events held around the UK. In total, 12 players advance from Final Qualifying to earn a place at the Open Championship.

The 2023 Open Championship will be shown on Sky Sports in the UK, and you can also watch the Open online via the Sky Go app. Highlights of the day’s play will also be shown every night on BBC Two.

In the United States, the Open will be shown on a combination of the Golf Channel and Peacock – NBC’s streaming platform – over the first two days. NBC will take over coverage for the final two rounds over the weekend.
