BACK TO WIN

Brooks Koepka

With three top-five finishes in his last four starts – two of which were majors – Koepka comes into his seventh Open Championship in formidable form.

The American is a major specialist who always seems to be at his best in the biggest events. Starting with his first win at the US Open in 2017, Koepka has finished inside the top seven in 11 of 15 major starts, including four wins and three runner-up finishes.

He also has a good record in the Open, with three top-10 finishes in his last four starts at this event.

Koepka’s time on the European Tour earlier in his career has made him more comfortable playing on British links courses than most Americans, and his recent form and incredible major record make him a huge contender at Royal St George’s.

EACH-WAY SHOUTS

Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton is one of the most accomplished links golfers in the world, so this event looks his best opportunity to break his major duck.

The Englishman has finished inside the top six in two of the last four Open Championships, including a T6 at Royal Portrush two years ago.

With two wins at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, three top-10s at the Scottish Open and two Irish Open top-fives, Hatton boasts a fantastic links record that few players can match.

Wins in the wind at the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship earlier this year also suggest that Hatton will have no problem with the weather conditions in Kent this week.

Patrick Reed

Reed has finished inside the top 20 in seven consecutive majors dating back to the 2019 US Open.

The first of those finishes came at the 2019 Open at Portrush, when the American earned a T10 that is his best result at this event to date.

That consistency in the biggest events means Reed is always a threat, and he’s proven he can get the job done, having won the 2018 Masters and two WGC events.

With form figures of 5-T19-T25-T32, Reed comes to the Open in decent nick and looks primed to challenge for his second major win.

OUTSIDE SHOT

Lucas Herbert

Herbert has hit top form just in time for the Open and looks well worth a punt at a big price this week.

The Australian won the Irish Open by three shots a fortnight ago and followed that up with a T4 at last week’s Scottish Open, shooting in the 60s on all four days and missing out on a playoff by one shot.

Herbert is on a run of four consecutive top-20 finishes and his impressive performance on the links in Scotland bodes very well for his chances at Royal St George’s.

This tends to be a major that suits more experienced players, but the 25-year-old did win the 2020 Dubai Desert Classic – a links-style event that has been won by several Open champions in the past.
